What the New CMS Payment Proposals Mean for Device Makers

A new research perspective was published in Oncoscience (Volume 10) on May 27, 2023, entitled, “Think outside the box – atypical infections in chronic sinusitis.” Inflammations of the paranasal sinuses represent a common clinical picture. The annual prevalence of chronic sinusitis in Europe is up to 10%. Sinusitis can be divided into acute and chronic forms. In particular, the chronic forms (>12 weeks duration) are often challenging in the context of therapy. Generally, all ventilation disorders of the paranasal sinuses (concha bullosa, nasal septal deviations, etc.,) represent risk factors for the development of any form of sinusitis. In addition, an immune deficiency or systemic diseases relevant to the immune system predispose to infections with atypical pathogens. Dive Brief The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Urotronic’s minimally invasive surgical treatment of symptoms linked to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the company announced Tuesday. BPH is defined by the expansion of the prostate. As the organ grows, it can cause changes in the bladder that result in lower urinary tract symptoms such as leaking urine. Urotronic’s newly approved Optilume BPH catheter system is designed to tackle the symptoms through mechanical dilation and the delivery of paclitaxel to stop the problem from recurring. Bilateral total knee arthroplasty may increase risk of complications

Patients undergoing bilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are at an increased risk of several types of complications, as compared with matched patients undergoing unilateral TKA, reports a study in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery. The FDA will release its verdict on June 16 regarding Bristol Myers Squibb‘s sNDA proposing to use its heart drug Camzyos (mavacamten) to lower the need for septal reduction therapy (SRT) in patients with symptomatic obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Currently, many patients suffering from HCM need to undergo SRT, Roland Chen, senior vice president and head of cardiovascular development, Global Drug Development at BMS, said in a statement upon the FDA’s acceptance of the sNDA. Children with drug-resistant epilepsy live longer after cranial surgery, large study finds

Survival rate beyond 10 years in children with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) was highest after cranial epilepsy surgery and lowest when treated only with antiseizure medications, according to a study published in The Lancet Child and Adolescent Health. This large, retrospective study was the first to compare long-term survival in children with DRE among cohorts treated with medications only, vagus nerve stimulation plus medications, and cranial epilepsy surgery plus medications. Results show that risk of early death was reduced by over 80% after surgery and by 40% after vagus nerve stimulation, compared to medication-only treatment. People with epilepsy have increased mortality rates compared to the age-matched population. Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions, affecting at least 3.4 million people in the United States.
