Dive Brief The private equity firm Carlyle Group is leading the race to buy Medtronic’s connected patient monitoring and respiratory care operations, according to Reuters. Medtronic outlined plans to spin off the units almost one year ago. At the time, the company proposed creating a new connected care company, but the move reportedly led to interest from potential buyers including Siemens Healthineers and GE HealthCare. Now, with Medtronic nearing the end of its targeted window for completing a transaction, Reuters has reported that Carlyle has entered into exclusive negotiations to buy a majority stake in the two businesses at a valuation of more than $7 billion. Dive Brief The Food and Drug Administration has issued advice on how to mitigate the risk of cell and tissue products transmitting tuberculosis. The recommendations follow a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that showed two recipients of bone matrix products died. In July, Aziyo Biologics, now rebranded as Elutia, recalled its viable bone matrix (VBM) products after two patients developed post-surgical infections. Elutia withdrew all of its VBM products and pivoted to drug-eluting biomatrices in response to its second link to tuberculosis since 2021. The FDA’s advice covers the role of the responsible person and donor screening. A man-made antibody successfully prevented organ rejection when tested in primates that had undergone a kidney transplant, Duke Health researchers report. The finding clears the way for the new monoclonal antibody to move forward in human clinical trials. Results of the study appear online Aug. 30 in the journal Science Translational Medicine. Imran J. Anwar, (M.D., lead author, surgical research fellow in Duke’s Department of Surgery) said, “Current medications to prevent organ rejection are good overall, but they have a lot of side effects. Pfizer is shelling out $43 billion to acquire Seagen primarily for the Seattle biotech’s antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) capabilities. But a trial win for a small-molecule cancer drug makes the deal more attractive. Seagen on Wednesday said a phase 3 trial testing a combination of its Tukysa and Roche’s Kadcyla has hit its main goal in patients with previously treated HER2-positive breast cancer. Compared with Kadcyla and placebo, the combo significantly reduced the risk of tumor progression or death, Seagen said. Data on patient survival remain immature. Seagen plans to share the detailed results from the HER2CLIMB-02 trial at a medical meeting and will discuss them with the FDA, the company’s R&D chief, Roger Dansey, said in a statement. Surgalign, which is selling its assets under court supervision after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, said in a statement on Friday that Xtant Medical Holdings also was selected in a bidding process to acquire its hardware and biologics assets for a cash purchase price of $5 million, along with the assumption of certain liabilities. A study presented today at the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery’s (SNIS) 20th Annual Meeting indicated that it may be possible to use a less invasive technique to identify the gene mutations responsible for some arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in pediatric patients. AVMs, including vein of Galen malformations, which are usually diagnosed soon after birth, are tangled blood vessels that disrupt blood flow and oxygen circulation, and are most often found in the brain and spinal cord. These vessels can rupture and cause brain hemorrhage, stroke, and brain damage for children and adults. Many complex AVMs in children are caused by a few specific gene mutations, but it’s difficult to find out which mutation is responsible (and, therefore, which treatment to use) without taking a surgical biopsy of the AVM. Merck and Moderna announced Wednesday the initiation of a pivotal Phase III high-risk melanoma trial combining the companies’ mRNA-based personalized cancer vaccine with Merck’s blockbuster Keytruda checkpoint inhibitor. After a successful Phase IIb in stage III/IV melanoma patients with high risk of recurrence after surgery, Phase III is expanding the population to include stage IIb-IV patients. The study will enroll around 1,089 patients at more than 165 sites and in over 25 countries. The primary endpoint is recurrence-free survival. Secondary endpoints include distant metastasis-free survival and overall survival. Patients will receive either V940 (mRNA-4157), being co-developed and commercialized by Merck and Moderna, in combination with Keytruda or Keytruda alone for comparison. Immunotherapy attempts to enable these cells to eradicate the abnormal cells, but so far, it has met with little success when it comes to glioblastomas. Researchers led by Professor Gregor Hutter from the Department of Biomedicine at the University and University Hospital Basel have recently used patient data, experiments with mice, and samples from human tumors to study one of these “don’t eat me” signals and its inhibitory effect.
