In 2015, Apple initiated HELO (Hybridized Emergency Location) a protocol that helps identify a callers’ location using various data such as wifi access points, GPS and cell phone towers. This has now been further developed by RapidSOS to send the data via secure channels to emergency call rooms.
The Apple Heart Study — which began enrollment at the end of November — has now begun data collection, with participants receiving prompts over the weekend to sign informed consent documents and initiate data collection. That document also reveals some new details about how Apple plans to use data collected during the study.
Chronic diseases and health conditions are often incurable and can adversely impact the longevity and quality of a person’s life if not managed actively. The wide prevalence of these conditions along with the fact that they are often preventable and frequently manageable with early detection and with the right health practices, calls for more focus on empowering patients in ongoing self-care.
