First responders in an emergency event will now be able to receive locations of people in distress with more ease thanks to a new partnership between Apple and RapidSOS.
In 2015, Apple initiated HELO (Hybridized Emergency Location) a protocol that helps identify a callers’ location using various data such as wifi access points, GPS and cell phone towers. This has now been further developed by RapidSOS to send the data via secure channels to emergency call rooms.
Former FCC Chair and currently a member of the startup’s board, Patrick Wheeler, said in a statement: “Helping 911 services quickly and accurately assess caller location has been a major issue since my time at the FCC,” he also stated that “This advancement from Apple and RapidSOS will be transformative for emergency response in the United States.”
Apple stated that they are committed to ensuring the data is not used for anything other than emergency situations and sent only to the 911 center in question.
