A recent study finds that longstanding childhood second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure is linked to higher mortality in adulthood due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). 70,900 individuals aged 50 years and above registered from 1992-1993 to 2016-2017 who had not smoked, included in the Cancer Prevention Study–II Nutrition Cohort, provided data which was analyzed by researchers to find any link between exposure to SHS in childhood and adulthood and the mortality risk in later life. The researchers published their findings in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, which saw that children who were exposed to SHS for about 16-18 years showed 31% more chances of mortality from COPD than children who were devoid of such exposure. Any amount of exposure to SHS in childhood showed 21% more chances of death due to COPD. “It is established that SHS [secondhand smoke] exposure in childhood can result in asthma, chronic wheezing, respiratory infections, ...
The results of a study on the high concentration performance-stabilized Hypochlorus Acid (HOCI) developed by Sonoma Pharmaceuticals for treating acne vulgaris was presented along with earlier Sonoma’s HOCI studies for acne by the lead researcher Mark Steven Nestor, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the Center for Clinical and Cosmetic Research, Aventura Florida and Voluntary Associate Professor in the Departments of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery and the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. Dr. Nestor said, “This study truly demonstrates that both of these new HOCl products show significant efficacy in the treatment of mild-to-moderate acne. And in doing so, both the gel and the solution were extremely well tolerated. Additionally, based on the safety profile of HOCl, I have no problem recommending HOCl topical treatment to young children or women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.” Adding, “ I ...
Boston Scientific’s ACURATE neo2 prosthetic aortic valve system witnessed an “a high procedural success rate and a low rate of paravalvular aortic regurgitation (leakage of blood near the valve),” after being implanted for a month in a clinical study. The company is publicizing the findings of the study before it is made available in the market. It was observed that 97% of individuals showed no or little paravalvular aortic regurgitation and the positioning of the implant was quick and successful without any significant complications in the same percentage of patients registered in the ACURATE neo2 CE-Mark Study. Moreover, the all-cause mortality rate in the study was found to be 3.3% and a disabling stroke was reported in 1.7% of the patients. Severe Paravalvular leak (PVL) was reported in none while mild or lesser PVL was noted in about 97% of patients and 3% reported moderate PVL. Data pertaining to the implanting ...
Actifuse Flow, Baxter International’s new synthetic bone graft surrogate from its osteobiologics surgery series, wins FDA approval for implementation in orthopedic surgeries. In order to reach tine bony cracks and gaps of the skeletal structure, the new bone graft alternative is designed to reach these exact cranny locations. It is delivered via a syringe already containing it to speed-up bone growth. No preparatory procedure or mixing is needed to use this bone graft substitute and it maintains its fluid consistency during the surgery. The surgical products manufacturer’s Actifuse Bone Graft Alternative constituting Actifuse Flow implements the silicate-substituted technology for bone formation via raised levels of silicon. It becomes an ideal candidate for minimally invasive surgical procedures as the syringe facilitates the start and stop of flow to deliver the precise amount of substance. This also enables it to compact small done deformities as well as the intricate disorder of bone ...
The Desert Research Institute (DRI) and the University of Nevada, Reno researchers’ new pilot study reveals that a vaping (e-cigarette use) episode exposes the user’s respiratory pathway to a considerable quantity of carcinogens like formaldehyde, which alarms everyone about the dangers of vaping. “Until now, the only research on the respiratory uptake of aldehydes during smoking has been done on conventional cigarette users,” said Vera Samburova, Ph.D., associate research professor in DRI’s Division of Atmospheric Sciences and lead author of the study. “Little is known about this process for e-cigarette use, and understanding the unique risks vaping poses to users is critical in determining toxicological significance.” The breath of 12 e-cigarette consumers before and post vaping were tested for measurement of existence of harmful chemicals. Samburova and her associate Khlystov designed a way to measure this during their study. The method enabled them to measure the quantity of aldehydes in ...
The RAS-45 acoustic respiration sensor, developed by Masimo, to function along with the Rainbow Acoustic Monitoring (RAM), was approved by the FDA for use in neonates and infant patients. A minimum weight of 22pounds/10 kgs of the baby was required earlier to be eligible for use of RAM sensors. This requirement is no longer necessary for the new sanction that enables a convenient monitoring of the rate of respiration in very young pediatric patients. This is possible because the maximum respiration rate in the sensor has been raised to 120 breaths per minute with an excellent precision between +/- breath every minute. The sensor can be stuck on to the child and it is fitted with a microphone mimicking device that spots respiration sounds from other background sounds. Its clarity enables pediatricians to listen to the breathing of the infant as if he/she is listening via a stethoscope. The sensor ...
Ibudilast retarded brain atrophy in 255 advancing multiple scleroses (MS) patients more than a placebo in a National Institute of Health’s (NIH) National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) funded the brain imaging clinical trial. 28 clinical locations were studied for 96 weeks to evaluate the decline in brain atrophy progress. MRI scans were done on the patients’ brains half-yearly. Varied analysis techniques were used as scales to measure the variations in brain alterations seen in the MRI films among the two groups. Brain atrophy was observed in both the groups but the ibudilast group demonstrated the slower rate of shrinkage of the brain. The brain shrunk by 2.5ml more over two years in the group on placebo. NINDS director Walter Koroshetz said, “These findings provide a glimmer of hope for people with a form of multiple sclerosis that causes long-term disability but does not have many treatment options.” ...
A Danish, multicenter, randomized POET trial revealed that after declared clinically stable on taking intravenous antibiotics in a hospital for one to two weeks, left-sided endocarditis patients could be sent home with a prescription of antibiotics to be taken orally to complete the rest of the treatment. “Shifting to oral antibiotic treatment in stabilized patients with endocarditis was as effective and safe as continued intravenous antibiotic treatment and was given during half the antibiotic treatment period. These novel findings may have a significant impact on future clinical practice for the management of patients who are stable,” Henning Bundgård, MD, said at the annual congress of the European Society of Cardiology. Guiding principles from the ESC and American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology suggest 6 weeks of intravenous antibiotics for the management of infective endocarditis. This reduces the stay in the hospital to half resulting in lowering of the expenses borne by ...
Medications like buprenorphine, naltrexone, or methadone when added to treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) youths, resulted in longer adherence to in-care regimen. However, very few receive the medicines, reveals a retrospective cohort study. The study on 4,837 OUD youths between the age 13-22 years including 2,752 females observed that only 1 out of 4 youths and 1 out of 21 adolescents received medication, as reported by Scott E. Hadland, MD, MPH, MS, of Grayken Center for Addiction and Department of Pediatrics, Boston Medical Center, and coinvestigators. The results brought greater attention to the need for better management of OUD in young adults and increase their adherence to treatment, noted Dr. Hadland and co-authors in JAMA Pediatrics. “As deaths from overdose increase among U.S. youths, it is vital that clinicians, researchers, and policy makers ensure that access to evidence-based OUD medications for young people remains a national priority,” they said. The ...
We might have come across many people who are usually obsessed with cats. But at times, this obsession can turn into madness. Where does this madness arise from? There is a research link between the cat parasite named Toxoplasma gondii and the psychiatric disorders like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. House cats are considered as the primary hosts of Toxoplasma gondii. But according to a study published in Psychological Medicine in 2017, it was reported that just having the cats doesn’t increase the risk of psychosis. It’s the cat parasite that causes psychosis. Later, a research team from Dartmouth College’s Geisel School of Medicine NH, were trying to find the parasite’s immune power against cancer tumors, with the ultimate goal of making a cancer vaccine. Researchers have known that T. gondii infection strongly induces a Th1 immune response, which can increase the cancer survival rates. David J. Bzik, PhD, the lead ...
