Global Recall – Hypertension drugs contain wrong drug

A global recall for blood pressure drugs has been issued by Accord Healthcare, since they contain a heart failure drug. Oral consumption of 12.5 mg hydrochlorothiazide tablets is used to treat high blood pressure. Recently during the export of one lot of 100-count bottles, it was discovered that the lot contains spironolactone tablets. The company believed that no other lot was involved in this confusion. Hence, Accord Healthcare recalled the lot since spironolactone pills can immediately alter the potassium levels, which leads to life threatening issues. Though spironolactone is used to treat liver cirrhosis and heart failure, it should be consumed only under doctor’s recommendation. The US- Food and Drug Administration said that it was a pharmacist, who first alerted Accord Healthcare to the issue. Age based screening recommended for STI in HIV patients

Findings from data pertaining to 16,864 gonorrhea and Chlamydia tests done on individuals visiting three HIV Research Network locations spanning 2011-2014, suggested that females and males who indulge in sexual intercourse only with women (MSW) should be screened based on age and not universally, as reported by Susan A. Tuddenham, MD, an assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. “Detection and treatment of gonorrhea and chlamydia in HIV-positive patients in the United States is a priority both because of patient morbidity and because of the potential for these infections to enhance transmission of HIV,” said Dr. Tuddenham. New drug formulation for opioid addiction approved by FDA.

Cassipa, a Teva Phaarmaceuticals manufactured sublingual film containing naloxone and buprenorphine in new dosage amounts, receives FDA approval on the 7th of September as a continuing therapy for opioid addiction. In a press release, the FDA announced that the buprenorphine and naloxone sublingual film, formulated in a 16 mg/4 mg dose for Cassipa, is sanctioned not only in its brand version but also in its generic edition. The two drugs in different strength combinations are also approved by the FDA.
