Nearly 70% females develop uterine fibroids after menopause. This fibroid growth is quite common among the women of reproductive age. The common symptoms of fibroid include abdominal discomfort and bowel issues.
There is a 53-year-old woman from Singapore who avoided these symptoms, which lead to the overgrowth of fibroid structure for around 26-inches. It occupied the entire abdominal and pelvic cavity, which got extended to the bottom of her breastbone. Hence she was unable to breathe, which led to hospitalization.
Dr. Ph Ting Lim, an OB-GYN resident from KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Singapore diagnosed her condition and decided to perform a complete hysterectomy to remove the 61-pound fibroid. Then, a plastic surgery was performed to reconstruct her thinned abdominal wall.
It was still unclear regarding the duration of fibroid growth in the patient’s body. Since she was scared of surgery, she might have ignored her symptoms and never went for uterine examination. Due to slow fibroid growth, hysterectomy was even possible in her case.
Now after surgery, the patient’s condition is fine. This case history was published in The BMJ Case Report. As per medical history, the largest fibroid weighing 100 pounds was successfully removed in a living patient.
