On witnessing another outbreak of salmonella from backyard chicken this week, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning saying, "Always wash your hands after handling live poultry."
According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations and 450 deaths in the United States alone every year. Salmonella infections are caused via contaminated foods, which leads to fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
Fresh cut melons sold at popular grocery stores were responsible for nearly 60 people being infected with Salmonella. In order to be sure of what is safe to consume and what not, refer to the list of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) consumable items. Here they state that people need not give up melons entirely but rather only the pre-cut ones.
