Ibudilast retarded brain atrophy in 255 advancing multiple scleroses (MS) patients more than a placebo in a National Institute of Health’s (NIH) National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) funded the brain imaging clinical trial. 28 clinical locations were studied for 96 weeks to evaluate the decline in brain atrophy progress. MRI scans were done on the patients’ brains half-yearly. Varied analysis techniques were used as scales to measure the variations in brain alterations seen in the MRI films among the two groups. Brain atrophy was observed in both the groups but the ibudilast group demonstrated the slower rate of shrinkage of the brain. The brain shrunk by 2.5ml more over two years in the group on placebo. NINDS director Walter Koroshetz said, “These findings provide a glimmer of hope for people with a form of multiple sclerosis that causes long-term disability but does not have many treatment options.” ...
A Danish, multicenter, randomized POET trial revealed that after declared clinically stable on taking intravenous antibiotics in a hospital for one to two weeks, left-sided endocarditis patients could be sent home with a prescription of antibiotics to be taken orally to complete the rest of the treatment. “Shifting to oral antibiotic treatment in stabilized patients with endocarditis was as effective and safe as continued intravenous antibiotic treatment and was given during half the antibiotic treatment period. These novel findings may have a significant impact on future clinical practice for the management of patients who are stable,” Henning Bundgård, MD, said at the annual congress of the European Society of Cardiology. Guiding principles from the ESC and American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology suggest 6 weeks of intravenous antibiotics for the management of infective endocarditis. This reduces the stay in the hospital to half resulting in lowering of the expenses borne by ...
Medications like buprenorphine, naltrexone, or methadone when added to treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) youths, resulted in longer adherence to in-care regimen. However, very few receive the medicines, reveals a retrospective cohort study. The study on 4,837 OUD youths between the age 13-22 years including 2,752 females observed that only 1 out of 4 youths and 1 out of 21 adolescents received medication, as reported by Scott E. Hadland, MD, MPH, MS, of Grayken Center for Addiction and Department of Pediatrics, Boston Medical Center, and coinvestigators. The results brought greater attention to the need for better management of OUD in young adults and increase their adherence to treatment, noted Dr. Hadland and co-authors in JAMA Pediatrics. “As deaths from overdose increase among U.S. youths, it is vital that clinicians, researchers, and policy makers ensure that access to evidence-based OUD medications for young people remains a national priority,” they said. The ...
We might have come across many people who are usually obsessed with cats. But at times, this obsession can turn into madness. Where does this madness arise from? There is a research link between the cat parasite named Toxoplasma gondii and the psychiatric disorders like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. House cats are considered as the primary hosts of Toxoplasma gondii. But according to a study published in Psychological Medicine in 2017, it was reported that just having the cats doesn’t increase the risk of psychosis. It’s the cat parasite that causes psychosis. Later, a research team from Dartmouth College’s Geisel School of Medicine NH, were trying to find the parasite’s immune power against cancer tumors, with the ultimate goal of making a cancer vaccine. Researchers have known that T. gondii infection strongly induces a Th1 immune response, which can increase the cancer survival rates. David J. Bzik, PhD, the lead ...

Varied research is going on throughout the world in order to find the cause and treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Bloomberg School have reported that the elders who often feel sleepy during day time are three times more prone to Alzheimer’s disease. These study findings were recently published in the journal named SLEEP. Alzheimer’s disease occurs due to the development of beta-amyloid plaques in brain which results in the changes of nerve structure. The risk of this disease can be reduced by following proper exercise, diet as well as cognitive activities. Recently it was discovered that sleep pattern is also a major risk factor. Improper sleep can develop beta-amyloid protein accumulation in later stage of life. But the reason behind this mechanism is still unknown. The research team came to know the role of sleep by conducting a ...
