Dive Brief A former DePuy Synthes sales representative and team lead was arrested this week for allegedly defrauding a Boston area hospital and lying to federal authorities investigating whether he interfered with the hospital’s sterilization processes. Matthew Capobianco, 45, of Winchester, Massachusetts, was indicted on eight counts of wire fraud and one count of making material false statements, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston. Johnson & Johnson unit DePuy Synthes, in an emailed statement, said all government claims against the company in the matter have been resolved. The European Commission (EC) has granted UCB’s Bimzelx (bimekizumab) two new approvals, with the inflammatory disease drug now authorised to treat certain adults with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). The marketing authorisations, which follow a pair of recommendations from the European Medicines Agency’s human medicines committee earlier this year, make Bimzelx the first and only IL-17A and IL-17F inhibitor approved in the EU for these two indications. The authorisation for PsA – a type of arthritis that affects some patients with psoriasis – specifically applies to those with active disease who have had an inadequate response or have been intolerant to one or more disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs. The approval was supported by results from two phase 3 trials in which Bimzelx showed improvements over placebo in joint and skin symptoms across biologic naïve and TNF inhibitor-inadequate responder populations. “The approval of [Bimzelx] in PsA provides rheumatologists and dermatologists ...
Dive Brief: Growth in parts of the orthopedic market will start to normalize late this year as surgeons work though a backlog of cases that had been postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic, analysts at Needham wrote. The analysts expect hip growth to normalize late this year and the knee and spine markets to slow down by the end of 2024. In the trauma and extremities market, the analysts see potential for “above-normal growth for some time.” A slowdown in capital spending by hospitals, currency fluctuations and supply chain issues are among factors the analysts said could hurt revenue for a number of the orthopedic companies. Dive Insight: Orthopedic companies have made a fast start to 2023, with Zimmer Biomet’s CEO saying “pretty much everything went better than expected” in the first quarter and an analyst admitting to being “kind of blown away by how good the growth rates were in ...
Omar Ford Quest Diagnostics is diving into a quickly growing segment of liquid biopsy with its latest M&A prospect. The Secaucus, NJ-based company announced a definitive agreement to acquire Haystack Oncology in an all-cash equity transaction. Quest will pay $300 million in cash at closing and Haystack has the potential to obtain up to an additional $150 million in performance milestones. If the deal were to close, then Quest would inherit Baltimore, MD – based Haystack’s minimal residual disease testing technology. MRD testing is a specific category of liquid biopsy that identifies circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in the bloodstream of patients following surgery and treatment for cancer. In a prospective, multi-institution study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in June 2022, an earlier version of the Haystack technology demonstrated the ability to better identify patients with residual disease for adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery for stage II colon cancer, thereby reducing ...
In a paper recently published in PNAS Nexus, researchers from the Department of Comparative Biosciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign describe how they were able to inhibit the activity of a specific neuronal cell type in the hippocampus to induce cellular and behavioral changes associated with aging. Their study confirms a causal relationship between reduced function of certain interneurons in the brain and cognitive decline. In addition, their novel experimental model may be useful for studying age-related cognitive disorders. First author Jinrui Lyu, a graduate student in the Neuroscience Program and the Department of Comparative Biosciences, performed and analyzed the experiments for the study. Corresponding author Uwe Rudolph is professor and head of the Department of Comparative Biosciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine. These authors answered some questions about the design and significance of their study. What was the motivation for your study? Our lab is interested in why ...
Actifuse Flow, Baxter International’s new synthetic bone graft surrogate from its osteobiologics surgery series, wins FDA approval for implementation in orthopedic surgeries. In order to reach tine bony cracks and gaps of the skeletal structure, the new bone graft alternative is designed to reach these exact cranny locations. It is delivered via a syringe already containing it to speed-up bone growth. No preparatory procedure or mixing is needed to use this bone graft substitute and it maintains its fluid consistency during the surgery. The surgical products manufacturer’s Actifuse Bone Graft Alternative constituting Actifuse Flow implements the silicate-substituted technology for bone formation via raised levels of silicon. It becomes an ideal candidate for minimally invasive surgical procedures as the syringe facilitates the start and stop of flow to deliver the precise amount of substance. This also enables it to compact small done deformities as well as the intricate disorder of bone ...
