Mike Hollan BrandShield states that it has identified sites selling counterfeit versions of Wegovy and Ozempic, among other drugs. It’s important to always be careful whenever buying anything from a website, especially medication. In recent years, it’s become much more common for patients and other consumers to find online sources where they can directly access medications without having to visit a pharmacy. This provides clear benefits for patients, such as limiting the burden placed upon them and potentially helping to reduce the cost of some medications. As is the case with most things, however, there are also risks. A new report from Reuters details one company’s work to take down sites selling fake medications.1 Not surprisingly, a significant percentage of these sites were selling counterfeit weight-loss drugs, such as fake versions of Ozempic. The report does note, however, that the number of sites selling these counterfeit weight-loss drugs has significantly ...
Don Tracy, Associate Editor With a final decision expected next February, MenABCWY combines the protective elements of GSK’s existing vaccines to target the five primary serogroups of Neisseria meningitidis. GSK announced that the FDA has accepted for review an application for its five-in-one meningococcal vaccine MenABCWY. MenABCWY is a combination of GSK’s two existing vaccines, Bexsero and Menveo, and targets the five primary serogroups (A, B, C, W, and Y) of Neisseria meningitidis. These serogroups are credited with causing the majority of meningococcal disease (IMD) cases around the world. According to the company, a final decision is expected on February 14, 2025.1 “In the Phase III trial (NCT04502693), all primary endpoints were achieved for the MenABCWY vaccine candidate, including immunological non-inferiority to one dose of GSK’s Meningococcal Groups A,C,Y and W Vaccine, and non-inferior immune responses against 110 diverse MenB invasive strains (representing 95% of MenB strains circulating in the ...

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a highly aggressive type of cancer known for its ability to metastasize. The behavior of tumors is largely governed by which genes are turned on, or transcribed, irrespective of whether mutations are present. Researchers have identified various signature patterns of gene activation in SCLC, and these subtypes dictate how the cancer responds to treatments and its specific vulnerabilities. There is a significant need for blood-based tests that can determine SCLC subtypes, track disease progression, recognize transformations into other types of lung cancer, and identify potential treatment targets, especially when standard biopsies are not feasible. Scientists have now made progress towards a liquid biopsy capable of distinguishing between multiple SCLC subtypes from blood samples. New research at Fred Hutch Cancer Center (Seattle, WA, USA) has revealed that big-picture patterns of DNA packaging, gene activation, and mutations may provide the information required to develop a blood-based ...
Boehringer Ingelheim reported robust sales in 2023, with a 10.3% increase in human pharma sales that was strongly driven by Jardiance (empagliflozin) and Ofev (nintedanib). The German company announced that it had reached €20.8bn ($22.1bn) in human pharma sales in 2023, also achieving a 14.2% boost in research and development (R&D) investments that reached €5.8bn. Boehringer’s R&D investments accounted for 22.5% of net sales, as per a 16 April press release. Dive Brief Abbott is recalling thousands of Heartmate II and Heartmate 3 left ventricular assist systems because biological material can build up and obstruct the devices, making them less effective at pumping blood, the Food and Drug Administration said Monday. Reports of 273 injuries and 14 deaths have been linked to the problem, with the material typically taking two or more years to accumulate, according to the recall notice. The FDA identified the action as a Class I recall, the most serious type. Heartmate devices are used to support patients with severe left ventricular heart failure who are awaiting a heart transplant, or the device can be permanently implanted when a transplant isn’t an option. In February, Abbott told customers in an urgent correction letter there is no need to return any products to the company. Dive Insight Heartmate devices take over the pumping function of the left ventricle, the ...
When dermatologists spot an unusual mark on a patient’s skin, they face a choice: monitor it for some time or remove it for biopsy. Similarly, when removing breast tumors, surgeons must send excised tissues to pathologists who take several days to determine if any cancerous cells remain, leading to a second surgery for removing additional cells in about 20% of cases. Pathologists process these tissues by slicing them into thin sections and staining them with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), which enhances the visibility of cellular structures and is crucial for diagnosing cancers and other diseases. However, this method is labor-intensive and irreversible; once a biopsy is sliced in one direction, it cannot be resectioned for alternative views. Now, a “virtual biopsy” could allow dermatologists to forego the scalpel and scan the skin to check for cancerous cells without an incision. Similarly, surgeons might soon be able to determine if they ...
South Korea-based SK Life Sciences has received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for two new forms of administration of its epilepsy drug Xcopri (cenobamate), as an oral suspension mixed with water for mouth administration or via a nasogastric tube. Discovered and developed by SK Biopharmaceuticals, Xcopri is an anti-epileptic drug indicated for partial-onset seizures in adults. The therapy reduces repetitive neuronal firing by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium currents, leading to a decreased occurrence of seizures. The oral form of the treatment is taken once daily. The FDA-approved label revision is based on findings from an open-label study comparing the bioequivalence of three ways of administering the medication: swallowing a whole tablet, taking a crushed tablet in water by mouth, and using a nasogastric tube to administer a crushed tablet in water. The approval addresses the needs of patients living with epilepsy, who are unable to swallow Xcopri tablets whole, ...
