Rates of vaccination in the U.S. have dropped in recent years, with the COVID-19 pandemic hitting uptake. GSK, with a new vaccine to market, is looking to help turn this around.GSK is running a new “COiMMUNITY Initiative” that will add new funds, deeper data transparency and collaboration for all vaccine uptake across the country. On the money side, GSK said in a press release that it is “committing” up to $1 million in grant funding to support groups focused on adult immunization and health equity. On the data and collaboration side, GSK said it will continue to make adult vaccination claims data available through Vaccine Track platform, which publishes on a quarterly basis. The company also said it will “enhance the platform’s capabilities.” GSK is also looking to open the platform up to public and private stakeholders “to potentially integrate and host additional data and viewpoints on adult vaccination trends,” ...
Two cancers studies are slated to grab significant attention at the upcoming American Society of Clinical Oncology 2023 annual meeting, and each could lead to a major label expansion for the companies involved. With KEYNOTE-671, Merck is looking to shake up how nonmetastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is treated by testing Keytruda both before and after surgery. For its part, Novartis will elaborate on the postsurgery data for Kisqali in early breast cancer from the NATALEE trial. When the company said the trial met its endpoint, investors sent the Big Pharma’s stock price up by 8% in a single day. Before the official data revelations on June 2 for NATALEE and June 3 for KEYNOTE-671, Fierce Pharma gathered expectations for the two studies from oncology leaders at Penn Medicine and MD Anderson Cancer Center plus market analysts at multiple firms. The NATALEE study could open a market that’s worth ...
By Jef Akst Pictured: Illustration of a human body with the intestines highlighted/iStock, Rasi Bhadramani At $17 per share, Ironwood Pharmaceuticals has agreed to buy VectivBio for around $1 billion in a cash deal. In doing so, the Boston-based company, which already markets Linzess for irritable bowel syndrome and constipation with AbbVie, will expand its gastrointestinal drug portfolio. The Swiss biotech’s most advanced product is apraglutide, being developed for short bowel syndrome with intestinal failure (SBS-IF) that affects some 18,000 adult patients in the U.S., Europe and Japan, according to the Ironwood press release. People with the disorder are unable to absorb adequate nutrition from their food, leading to impaired quality of life and sometimes death. Takeda Pharmaceuticals has an approved drug, Gattex, that aims to treat short bowel syndrome but requires daily injections. Apraglutide is being tested in a Phase III study involving weekly injections. “There’s certainly challenges with ...
Roche has announced positive new data from a mid-stage study of fenebrutinib in adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). The phase 2 FENopta study met its primary and secondary endpoints, the company said, with oral fenebrutinib significantly reducing MRI markers of MS disease activity in the brain compared to placebo. MS is a disabling, neurological disease in which the immune system attacks the protective myelin sheath that covers the nerves and disrupts communication between the brain and the rest of the body. The disease affects approximately 2.8 million people worldwide. Relapsing forms of MS are characterised by clearly defined, but unpredictable, attacks of worsening neurologic function, followed by partial or complete recovery periods. Approximately 85% of patients are initially diagnosed with relapsing forms of MS, compared to 15% with progressive forms of the disease. Roche and Genentech’s fenebrutinib belongs to a class of drugs known as Bruton’s tyrosine ...
The United States’ COVID-19 health emergency might be over, but vaccine-related lawsuits are moving forward in full force. After Alnylam levied patent infringement claims against Moderna last year, the mRNA specialist is hitting back. In a pair of countersuits, Moderna claims Alnylam “baselessly seeks to profit” from Moderna’s inventions. Alnylam first sued Moderna in March 2022, claiming patent infringement on its so-called ‘933 patent. The patent covers delivery technology that Alnylam says is infringed by Moderna’s popular vaccine Spikevax. Alnylam later claimed violations on another patent that it received in July. The company did not seek to stop sales of the lucrative mRNA vaccine but instead requested damages and royalties. But Moderna isn’t having it. “Alnylam played no role in Moderna’s significant accomplishments,” the company said in a pair of countersuits, filed last week. The Spikevax maker says that it had been pioneering mRNA technologies for a decade before the ...
Just as biopharma’s M&A prospects seemed to be improving, the U.S. antitrust watchdog is putting a damper on dealmaking. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has filed a lawsuit to block Amgen’s proposed $27.8 billion acquisition of Horizon Therapeutics, the agency said Tuesday. By a unanimous vote among the three Democrat commissioners, the agency is seeking a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to prevent the transaction from closing. In an alarming sign for biopharma M&A scrutiny to come, the FTC argues Amgen could leverage its existing product portfolio to “entrench the monopoly positions” of Horizon meds for thyroid eye disease and chronic gout. The antitrust challenge marks the first time that the FTC has reached beyond specific product overlaps in its reviews and instead focused on companies’ past behaviors around drug pricing. It’s an approach that the agency has threatened to implement since 2021 but has only now reared its ...
Patients are now enrolling in an early stage clinical trial to test a universal flu vaccine based on messenger RNA technology, the National Institutes of Health announced Monday. Scientists hope the vaccine will protect against a wide variety of flu strains and provide long-term immunity so people do not have to receive a shot every year. Messenger RNA, or mRNA, is the technology behind Moderna ’s and Pfizer ’s widely used Covid vaccines. NIH played a crucial role in developing the mRNA platform used by Moderna. “A universal flu vaccine could serve as an important line of defense against the spread of a future flu pandemic,” Dr. Hugh Auchincloss, acting director of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in a statement Monday. The universal flu vaccine trial will enroll up to 50 healthy people ages 18 through 49 to test whether the experimental shot is safe and produces ...
As GSK’s July court date nears for a key Zantac trial in California, the company can wipe its hands of at least one Canadian class action suit. The company said in a Friday statement that it “welcomes the decision” of the British Columbia Supreme Court to dismiss a proposed class action suit on behalf of Canadian Zantac users. A Vancouver man filed the lawsuit in 2020, alleging that his use of the heartburn med from 2018 to 2019 caused him to develop cancer. His complaint named more than a dozen companies as defendants, including Sandoz Canada and GSK. But the court dismissed the case due to “the uncontroverted evidence that neither ranitidine nor NDMA are reliably associated with increased cancer risk,” GSK said in its statement. Zantac is ranitidine’s brand name and much of the Zantac cases revolve around reports of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) contamination in the products. Health Canada started investigating the potential impurity in ...
Experts have called for further scrutiny of a new Pfizer vaccine given during pregnancy to prevent respiratory infection in infants, after trials of a similar GSK vaccine were stopped after a rise in preterm birth and infant deaths. Pfizer says its vaccine is safe and effective, but experts contacted as part of an investigation published by The BMJ today, say Pfizer’s trial data should be reviewed in light of the signal for preterm births seen in GSK’s trial. Pfizer’s maternal RSV vaccine aims to protect infants from severe illness caused by the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). RSV is very common but can be fatal, especially in young children. In 2019, an estimated 3.6% of all deaths worldwide in children aged 1–6 months were due to RSV, with 97% of these deaths occurring in low and middle income countries. The vaccine has not yet been approved for use, but a decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is ...
While smaller biotech outfits have certainly taken the brunt, the layoff deluge of the past year hasn’t spared big pharmas either. Now, after unveiling more than 250 job cuts in San Diego in September, Bristol Myers Squibb is turning its staff reduction campaign northeast. Starting at the end of May, BMS will roll out job cuts for 48 employees in Princeton, New Jersey, according to a new Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) alert filed with the state. The BMS site in question is a 650,000-square-foot facility that houses employees from the commercial team, plus commercialization and late-stage development partners from the R&D unit. The plant also hosts members of BMS’ global product development and supply teams, according to the company’s website. It’s not immediately clear what types of roles will be affected. Putting the cuts into context, Bristol’s business model is “evolving to support our mission to discover, develop and deliver innovative ...
