Black patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) have a significantly higher burden of disease than white patients with the same device, according to a new study from University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) cardiology researchers. Analyzing data from clinical trials conducted over a 20-year period by the Clinical Cardiovascular Research Center (CCRC) at URMC, investigators concluded that not only did Black patients with ICDs tend to be significantly younger than white patients, but they also had a higher rate of post-implant cardiac events and risk of death. When a patient is at risk for cardiac arrest, an ICD helps to monitor their heart rhythm, and if an abnormality is detected, the device delivers a shock of electricity to reset the heartbeat to a normal rhythm. The study, published in Circulation, examines the rate of events that a patient experiences after their ICD is implanted. After three years of ...
Dive Brief The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Urotronic’s minimally invasive surgical treatment of symptoms linked to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the company announced Tuesday. BPH is defined by the expansion of the prostate. As the organ grows, it can cause changes in the bladder that result in lower urinary tract symptoms such as leaking urine. Urotronic’s newly approved Optilume BPH catheter system is designed to tackle the symptoms through mechanical dilation and the delivery of paclitaxel to stop the problem from recurring. Dive Insight Researchers studied the use of balloon dilation in BPH in the 1990s, but the technique failed to provide long-term benefits. Urotronic has tried to address that problem by pairing the immediate symptomatic relief provided by balloon dilation with localized delivery of paclitaxel, a drug that is already widely used in cardiovascular devices to prevent blood vessels from narrowing after ...
Current treatments for atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common heart condition characterized by fast and irregular beats that can lead to stroke and heart failure, have multiple side effects and are ineffective for preventing AFib recurrence. New research led by investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and published in Science reveals that certain immune cells play a major role in the development of AFib. Targeting these cells may therefore represent a promising strategy to treat and prevent AFib. For the work, senior author Matthias Nahrendorf, MD, PhD, an investigator in MGH’s Center for Systems Biology and the Richard Moerschner Endowed MGH Research Institute Chair in Men’s Health, and colleagues analyzed single cells from atrial heart tissue collected from patients with and without AFib. The analyses indicated that immune cells called macrophages are the most dynamic cell population in the atria during AFib, and these cells expand more than any ...
Medtronic’s exit from the left ventricular assist device (LVAD) market left a huge void. A small French company wants to fill it. A small French company has some mighty big shoes to fill in the left ventricular assist device (LVAD) market. When Medtronic pulled the plug on its embattled HeartWare ventricular assist device in 2021, the departure created a significant void in the LVAD market and highlighted the urgent need for innovation in the space to improve outcomes for end-stage heart failure patients. Abbott said it had the capacity and supply to effectively support the growing demand for mechanical circulatory support devices with its HeartMate 3 device, but Abbott and other LVAD makers suffer from limitations of using rotary pump technology, according to CorWave CEO Louis de Lillers. Clichy, France-based CorWave is developing an implantable heart pump for advanced heart failure patients that is based on a technology called ...
Biopharma companies, including Sanofi, AbbVie and Virax Biolabs, are finding significant business opportunities in the Middle East, particularly in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. These countries have emerged as attractive markets for novel therapies, driven by growing populations with increasing incidences of chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The Middle East is emerging as a key healthcare market, with an increasing demand for innovative healthcare solutions, particularly after the region struggled to meet the challenges brought on by the pandemic, said Cameron Shaw, chief operating officer for Virax Biolabs, which recently made a deal to set up a regional headquarters in the Dubai Science Park in the UAE. “The UAE was hit very hard by the COVID pandemic, similarly to how everyone in the world was affected,” Shaw told BioSpace. This is partly due to the high prevalence of diabetes and obesity in Dubai and Saudi Arabia, he ...
After a Delaware federal court ruled a Novartis combination patent on big-selling cardiovascular drug Entresto is invalid, the company pledged to continue its efforts to block generics with an appeal. The combination patent, which includes an extension thanks to a pediatric exclusivity award, is set to expire in July of 2025. Other patents on the drug run until 2026, 2027 and 2036. Now, Novartis will head to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) in an effort to reverse the decision, the company said in a recent statement. The company will “continue to defend” its Entresto patents “vigorously” and warned that any generics that launch before the outcome of the appeal “may be at risk” of litigation. Currently, there are no Entresto copycats with tentative or official FDA approvals, the company noted. Just last week, the company chalked up a win against Mylan when a West Virginia court ruled that the ...
Pictured: Novo Nordisk building in California/iStock, hapabapa Thursday, Novo Nordisk filed legal complaints against three pharmacies in Florida and one in Tennessee for allegedly selling products that contain semaglutide, the active compound in the company’s best-selling weight-loss and diabetes drugs Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus, Bloomberg reported. Novo filed three separate lawsuits in Florida federal court, targeting three compounding pharmacies: WellHealth, TruLife Pharmacy and Brooksville Pharmaceuticals. A fourth lawsuit was filed in Tennessee against DCA Pharmacy. The Danish drugmaker is asking the courts to block these pharmacies from marketing their semaglutide-containing products and is seeking unspecified financial damages. This latest round of lawsuits comes two weeks after Novo sent out a barrage of legal complaints against wellness and weight loss clinics, medical spas and other compounding pharmacies, also claiming that these businesses were selling products containing semaglutide. Semaglutide is a peptide that mimics the GLP-1 hormone to active its counterpart receptor. In turn, this induces the pancreas to secrete ...
By Kristen Rogers, CNN Having a fluctuating cholesterol level has been linked with higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease, a new study has found. coldsnowstorm/iStockphoto/Getty Images Editor’s Note: Sign up for CNN’s Eat, But Better: Mediterranean Style. Our eight-part guide shows you a delicious expert-backed eating lifestyle that will boost your health for life. CNN — The fact that having high cholesterol can cause health problems is well known. But a total cholesterol level that fluctuates a lot — either up or down within a five-year period — might also be problematic by raising the risk of later dementia, a new study found. “This study adds to a growing body of evidence showing that addressing certain modifiable risk factors and promoting healthy behaviors can reduce the risk of cognitive decline, possibly reduce the risk of dementia, and protect cognitive health,” said Christopher Weber, director of global science initiatives at the ...
Australia on Saturday became one of the first countries in the world to allow the use of MDMA and magic mushrooms for medical treatment, in a bid to tackle certain mental health conditions. From July 1, authorized psychiatrists will be able to prescribe the drugs, also known as ecstasy and psilocybin, for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and some types of depression. Authorities in Canada and the United States allow the medical use of one or both of the drugs, but only in clinical trials or with special permits. In February, Australia reclassified the drug entirely, after the country’s Therapeutic Goods Administration said trials had found the substances to be “relatively safe” when used in a “medically-controlled environment”. Supporters of the move hope the drugs can provide breakthroughs for mental health patients, when other treatments have failed. Mike Musker, a mental health and suicide prevention researcher at the University ...
Dive Brief Teleflex’s recall of its Arrow Endurance Extended Dwell Peripheral Catheter System was categorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a Class I event, the most severe type of recall. The company began the recall in May after receiving 83 complaints, including 18 reports of injuries. If the catheter separates while in a blood vessel, fragments could spread to other parts of the body and cause adverse events including heart attack and death, the FDA said in a notice. Hospitals should check if they have any of the 262,016 devices recalled in the U.S. and stop using the affected products. Teleflex is asking clinical staff overseeing patients who are currently using an affected product to weigh the risks and benefits of removing and replacing the device. Dive Insight Teleflex acquired Arrow International in 2007 to gain control of a portfolio of vascular access devices. That portfolio now ...
