Black Patients with ICDs Have Higher Rate of Post-Implant Cardiac Events and Risk of Death

Black patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) have a significantly higher burden of disease than white patients with the same device, according to a new study from University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) cardiology researchers. Analyzing data from clinical trials conducted over a 20-year period by the Clinical Cardiovascular Research Center (CCRC) at URMC, investigators concluded that not only did Black patients with ICDs tend to be significantly younger than white patients, but they also had a higher rate of post-implant cardiac events and risk of death. When a patient is at risk for cardiac arrest, an ICD helps to monitor their heart rhythm, and if an abnormality is detected, the device delivers a shock of electricity to reset the heartbeat to a normal rhythm. Urotronic Wins FDA Approval to challenge Boston Scientific, Teleflex for Prostate Market

Dive Brief The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Urotronic’s minimally invasive surgical treatment of symptoms linked to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the company announced Tuesday. Current treatments for atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common heart condition characterized by fast and irregular beats that can lead to stroke and heart failure, have multiple side effects and are ineffective for preventing AFib recurrence. Novartis Pledges to Appeal After Delaware Court Nixes Patent on Big-Selling Entresto

After a Delaware federal court ruled a Novartis combination patent on big-selling cardiovascular drug Entresto is invalid, the company pledged to continue its efforts to block generics with an appeal. The combination patent, which includes an extension thanks to a pediatric exclusivity award, is set to expire in July of 2025. Other patents on the drug run until 2026, 2027 and 2036. Now, Novartis will head to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) in an effort to reverse the decision, the company said in a recent statement. The company will “continue to defend” its Entresto patents “vigorously” and warned that any generics that launch before the outcome of the appeal “may be at risk” of litigation. Novo Nordisk Files Another Round of Lawsuits Over Semaglutide Copycats

Novo filed three separate lawsuits in Florida federal court, targeting three compounding pharmacies: WellHealth, TruLife Pharmacy and Brooksville Pharmaceuticals. A fourth lawsuit was filed in Tennessee against DCA Pharmacy. The Danish drugmaker is asking the courts to block these pharmacies from marketing their semaglutide-containing products and is seeking unspecified financial damages. Australia authorizes MDMA, magic mushrooms for medical treatment

Australia on Saturday became one of the first countries in the world to allow the use of MDMA and magic mushrooms for medical treatment, in a bid to tackle certain mental health conditions. From July 1, authorized psychiatrists will be able to prescribe the drugs, also known as ecstasy and psilocybin, for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and some types of depression. Teleflex recall of separating vascular catheters labeled Class I event

Dive Brief Teleflex’s recall of its Arrow Endurance Extended Dwell Peripheral Catheter System was categorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a Class I event, the most severe type of recall. The company began the recall in May after receiving 83 complaints, including 18 reports of injuries. If the catheter separates while in a blood vessel, fragments could spread to other parts of the body and cause adverse events including heart attack and death, the FDA said in a notice. Hospitals should check if they have any of the 262,016 devices recalled in the U.S. and stop using the affected products.
