Psychiatric disorders in children

Some types of epilepsy medicine taken during pregnancy are associated with an increased risk of severe psychiatric disorders in children. This is the conclusion of a comprehensive study of 38,000 children of mothers with epilepsy by researchers from Aarhus University. The research is published in the journal JAMA Neurology. While it has long been known that some forms of epilepsy medicine used during pregnancy are associated with a risk of birth defects, this new study is the most comprehensive study of children’s mental health so far. Seres’s Bacteria in a Pill Becomes First FDA-Approved Oral Microbiome Therapy

Recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection can be treated with fecal microbiota transplants. FDA approval of Seres Therapeutics’ Vowst makes it the first oral microbiome therapy. A capsule filled with bacteria is now FDA approved for treating a serious and potentially deadly type of gut infection, making the Seres Therapeutics drug the first oral microbiome therapy to receive the regulatory go-ahead for patients. The infection is caused by Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile or C. diff), a bacterium that’s part of the diverse microbial community in the intestines. When the gut microbiome is disrupted, C. diff can proliferate, releasing toxins that cause frequent diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. In severe cases, the infection leads to organ failure and death. Antibiotics can treat C. diff infection, but these bacteria can develop resistance, leading to a recurrence of the infection. UK monkeypox vaccine rollout to wind down

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has announced its vaccination programme against mpox will end this summer. Cases of the disease have fallen from a peak of 350 per week in July to just six new cases so far in 2023, three of which were caught overseas. First doses of the vaccine will remain available to those at highest risk until 16 June, with second doses available until the end of July. The UKHSA says it will monitor cases and restart the programme if needed. While the mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, virus can infect anyone, most UK cases were among men who have sex with men. Anyone eligible who has not yet received a vaccine is being encouraged to book an appointment to protect themselves before summer. Drugmakers take sides in Amgen, Regeneron fight over antibody patents

At issue are patents for powerful cholesterol-lowering medicines known as PCSK9 inhibitors. Regeneron and Sanofi brought the first, Praluent, to market in 2015. Amgen followed one month later with a similar medicine, called Repatha. The drugs work by boosting liver cells’ ability to hoover up LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol. EPA proposes new regulations on toxic gas used to sterilize spices and medical equipment

The agency said the new rules, which have not been finalized, would help to reduce ethylene oxide gas that these facilities release by 80%, bringing emissions below a Clean Air Act standard for elevated cancer risk. Communities exposed to ethylene oxide gas have been pushing the EPA to put tighter controls on plants that use ethylene oxide gas. In 2018, an EPA report found that dozens of communities across the nation faced elevated cancer risks because of trace of amounts of ethylene oxide released into air as part of the sterilization process. SARS-CoV-2 infection weakens immune-cell response to vaccination

In addition, the level of this key immune cell that targets the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein was substantially lower in unvaccinated people with COVID-19 than in vaccinated people who had never been infected. Importantly, people who recover from SARS-CoV-2 infection and then get vaccinated are more protected than people who are unvaccinated. WHO considers adding obesity drugs on its ‘essential medicines’ list

Drugs that combat obesity are under consideration for the first time for the World Health Organization’s “essential medicines list,” used to guide government purchasing decisions in low- and middle-income countries, the U.N. agency told Reuters. A panel of advisers to the WHO will review new requests for drugs to be included next month, with an updated essential medicines list due in September. The request to consider obesity drugs was submitted by three doctors and a researcher in the United States. It covers the active ingredient liraglutide in Novo Nordisk’s obesity drug Saxenda, which will come off patent soon, allowing for cheaper generic versions.
