Indian Government to Ban Oxycontin Imports

After months of inspections, Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare have taken a decision to ban the import of Oxytocin in India from 1 July 2018. The government has restricted private manufactures to produce Oxytocin formulations for domestic use, only state-owned Karnataka Antibiotics & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (KAPL) have been allowed to manufacture and directly supply to registered hospitals and clinics across India.

The main reason for the decision from the India government is due to the misuse of Oxytocin in the dairy industry, horticulture, and agriculture. Some social activists also claim that the growth-hormone drug has been used among trafficked children to accelerate puberty among girls.

Maneka Gandhi, women and child development minister, stated in the Indian parliament “The drug's abuse in animals shortens their lives and makes them barren sooner."

The notification states the following: "From 1st July 2018, no private manufacturer will be authorized to produce the drug for domestic use. Oxytocin in any form or name will not be allowed to be sold through retail Chemist,".

The Indian government has asked the registered hospitals and clinics in both the public & private sectors to get in touch with KAPL and place their orders with the company. The drug will not be available with retail chemists or any other manufacturer in India.

The government has also ordered tax officials and intelligence agency to increase vigilance in border areas.
