Recently the FDA asked drug companies to stop selling sunscreen pills which and warned people not to fall for such scams as there are no pills which can replace sunscreen.
FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb said “We’ve found products purporting to provide protection from the sun that isn’t delivering the advertised benefits. Instead, they’re misleading consumers, and putting people at risk”.
Advanced Skin Brightening Formula, Sunsafe Rx, Solaricare, and Sunergetic has been warned by the FDA and asked to stop claiming that pills can protect people from the sun’s rays.
They “are putting people’s health at risk by giving consumers a false sense of security that a dietary supplement could prevent sunburn, reduce early skin aging caused by the sun, or protect from the risks of skin cancer,” Gottlieb said. “Legitimate sunscreens are made in a wide range of sun protection factor values, also known as SPF values, and are over-the-counter drugs that come in many forms. These include lotions, creams, sticks, and sprays” he said.
“All of these creams are applied topically over the skin and must pass certain tests before they’re sold.”
Gottlieb said the FDA was also examining the safety of sunscreen ingredients.
