Dentists, Orthodontists to be Encouraged to use Telemedicine

Orthodontists and dentists will be helped by a new telemedicine association to integrate connected care technologies into their practices.

Launched in May, the American Teledentistry Association (ATDA) has launched a credible effort to popularize teledentistry as a tool to allow Americans increased access to care through the use of innovative technological advancements. Presently comprising of around 50 members, with four companies that provide mHealth-based orthodontic services, the association is also considering applications from roughly 50 practitioners in the processing stage.

Since teledentistry is still a relatively new concept, the association has been modeled as an advocacy group that can guide practitioners, help to develop best practices and ensure that technology is readily available for those wanting to use it.

Up to now, teledentistry has comprised primarily of orthodontists using mobile health channels for providing consultations and direct-to-consumer companies engaged in the development of clear aligners, or custom-made mouthpieces made to replace more expensive braces. The growth in the direct-to-consumer services model reflects its implementation in eyecare, another healthcare specialty.

The ocular telehealth field has seen a tremendous rise in recent times with the growth of companies like 1-800-CONTACTS and Opternative, thronged by companies and providers aiming to deliver eye care services via digital channels, leading to improved access for the underserved population and reduced cost benefits.
