The Annual Masters of Aesthetics Symposium witnessed Mathew M. Avram, MD, JD commenting that non-invasive fat eliminating techniques like laser therapy and cryolipolysis continue to garner interest and show an increasing implementation trend. “It does not compare to liposuction, but many patients prefer these devices because there’s less downtime,” he said. “They don’t want pain. They don’t want time away from work.” Dr. Avram, director of laser, cosmetics, and dermatologic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston believes that the emergence of non-invasive body shaping procedures since the last ten years has outpaced conventional liposuction by a large distance. He said, “It’s not even close. Among American Society for Dermatologic Surgery [ASDS] members, for every 1 liposuction, there are over 10 non-invasive body sculpting treatments.” “Each treatment has improved in efficacy with time,” Dr. Avram remarked. Data from the ASDS revealed that 208,000 cryolipolysis, 89,000 radiofrequency, 46,000 deoxycholic acid , ...

The results of a study on the high concentration performance-stabilized Hypochlorous Acid (HOCI) developed by Sonoma Pharmaceuticals for treating acne vulgaris was presented along with earlier Sonoma’s HOCI studies for acne by the lead researcher Mark Steven Nestor, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the Center for Clinical and Cosmetic Research, Aventura Florida and Voluntary Associate Professor in the Departments of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery and the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. Dr. Nestor said, “This study truly demonstrates that both of these new HOCl products show significant efficacy in the treatment of mild-to-moderate acne. And in doing so, both the gel and the solution were extremely well tolerated. Additionally, based on the safety profile of HOCl, I have no problem recommending HOCl topical treatment to young children or women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.” Adding, “ ...
Hyperkalemia is defined as the condition where there would be a higher potassium level in blood. The potassium level goes higher due to chronic kidney disease and type 1 diabetes, suffered by millions of people. Irregular heartbeat is the common symptom of hyperkalemia. A blood sample is required to detect the potassium level till date. But a Silicon Valley start-up company named AliveCor along with the doctors from Mayo Clinic have developed a novel technology, where the blood sample is not required. Just by looking at the electrocardiogram (ECG) pattern which records the electric signals of the heart, the level of potassium can be detected. Hence, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had given ‘breakthrough device’ designation on 10th September 2018 for a novel way of potassium level measurement. Vic Gundotra, the CEO of AliveCor, said “It was a pie-in-the-sky idea that we could use AI to see something like ...
The skin rejuvenation procedures like ‘Vampire facial’ are conducted by cosmetologists in order to regenerate the damaged part of the patient’s skin, which will make you look younger. In many regions, even a spa offers this service. But is it really safe? Is there any risk behind it? In Vampire facial, the platelets are extracted from the client’s blood and re-injected back into the face via micro-needling method. Though this procedure seems to be effective, no research study claims that it has a long-lasting effect. The risk is found especially in handling the blood. When a client reported that she got affected by an unspecified disease following the Vampire facial procedure, the health officials from the New Mexico Department of Health, along with representatives of the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department and the Barbers and Cosmetologists Board, visited the spa located in Albuquerque, from where she had gone through ...
The Jak2/Stat5 genetic pathway which controls the natural development of mammary glands and also breast cancer cells is regulated by the enzyme cyclophilin A (CypA), find VCU Massey Cancer Center researchers headed by Charles Clevenger, M.D., Ph.D., which could be a new target for breast cancer therapies. “This research identifies cyclophilin A as a relevant target for therapeutic intervention in breast cancer. Because FDA-approved drugs are available to inhibit the action of CypA, translation of these findings to breast cancer patients should be rapid,” said Clevenger, interim associate director for basic research, member of the Cancer Cell Signaling research program and Carolyn Wingate Endowed Chair in Cancer Research at VCU Massey Cancer Center. “No study to date had previously examined the loss of CypA function during mammary development and the formation of cancer.” Clevenger and his associates could suppress the initiation of the Stat5 pathway in mouse models having ER-positive ...
A recent study finds that longstanding childhood second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure is linked to higher mortality in adulthood due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). 70,900 individuals aged 50 years and above registered from 1992-1993 to 2016-2017 who had not smoked, included in the Cancer Prevention Study–II Nutrition Cohort, provided data which was analyzed by researchers to find any link between exposure to SHS in childhood and adulthood and the mortality risk in later life. The researchers published their findings in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, which saw that children who were exposed to SHS for about 16-18 years showed 31% more chances of mortality from COPD than children who were devoid of such exposure. Any amount of exposure to SHS in childhood showed 21% more chances of death due to COPD. “It is established that SHS [secondhand smoke] exposure in childhood can result in asthma, chronic wheezing, respiratory infections, ...
