Mike Hollan BrandShield states that it has identified sites selling counterfeit versions of Wegovy and Ozempic, among other drugs. It’s important to always be careful whenever buying anything from a website, especially medication. In recent years, it’s become much more common for patients and other consumers to find online sources where they can directly access medications without having to visit a pharmacy. This provides clear benefits for patients, such as limiting the burden placed upon them and potentially helping to reduce the cost of some medications. As is the case with most things, however, there are also risks. A new report from Reuters details one company’s work to take down sites selling fake medications.1 Not surprisingly, a significant percentage of these sites were selling counterfeit weight-loss drugs, such as fake versions of Ozempic. The report does note, however, that the number of sites selling these counterfeit weight-loss drugs has significantly ...

Cyberattacks remain a formidable threat to healthcare providers, with hackers’ tactics getting more sophisticated by the day. Policymakers are trying to combat this. For example, New York Governor Kathy Hochul released a proposed set of cybersecurity regulations in November that require hospitals to establish new policies and procedures to protect themselves from ever-intensifying cyber threats. And a couple weeks ago, HHS published guidance outlining voluntary cybersecurity performance goals for the healthcare sector. While this initial guidance is voluntary, these goals will likely be used to inform upcoming HHS rulemaking. In its guidance, HHS outlined 10 key goals for strengthening providers’ cybersecurity: mandating basic cybersecurity training, mitigating known vulnerabilities, boosting email security, using multifactor authentication, ensuring strong encryption, requiring unique credentials, revoking credentials for departing workforce members, separating user and privileged accounts, establishing incident response plans, and vetting vendors’ cybersecurity. These guidelines are a starting point toward a more secure and ...
BY JIM HAMMERAND The London-based device developer disclosed the cybersecurity incident in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing this week, saying the incident disrupted portions of its information technology systems and business operations. “Promptly after detecting the issue, the company began an investigation with assistance from external cybersecurity experts and is coordinating with law enforcement,” LivaNova said in the filing. “The company continues to assess what information and systems were impacted and is executing its incident response plan, including implementing remediation measures to mitigate the impact of the incident.” “The company has and will continue to take actions to remediate the issue, such as taking certain systems offline,” the company continued. LivaNova said it expects continued disruption of its operations, and can’t yet determine “the extent of the impact from such event on its business, results of operations, cash flows or financial condition.” Earlier this year, the SEC launched new ...
New York Governor Kathy Hochul released a proposed set of cybersecurity regulations that require hospitals to establish new policies and procedures to protect themselves from ever-intensifying cyber threats. The state also put aside $500 million in funding to help hospitals upgrade their technology systems to comply with these new rules. By KATIE ADAMS If newly proposed regulations are finalized in New York, hospitals in the state will soon have to beef up their cybersecurity measures. This week, New York Governor Kathy Hochul released a proposed set of cybersecurity regulations that require hospitals to establish new policies and procedures to protect themselves from ever-intensifying cyber threats. The governor’s budget for next year includes $500 million in funding to help hospitals upgrade their technology systems to comply with these new rules. Some experts think the proposed rules will serve as a blueprint for other states to draft similar sets of regulations. New ...
Food insecurity is associated with slightly faster memory decline in middle- to older-aged U.S. adults, according to a study published online July 3 in JAMA Network Open. Peiyi Lu, Ph.D., from Columbia University in New York City, and colleagues examined whether exposure to food insecurity is associated with changes in memory function among 12,609 middle- to older-aged U.S. adults (11,951 food-secure and 658 food-insecure) followed for 18 years (1998 to 2016). The researchers found that over time, the memory function of the food-secure respondents decreased by 0.045 standard deviation units annually (β for time, −0.045), with a faster memory decline rate among food-insecure respondents than food-secure respondents. However, the magnitude of the coefficient was small (β for food insecurity × time, −0.0030), yielding an estimated 0.67 additional (i.e., excess) years of memory aging over a 10-year period for food-insecure respondents compared with food-secure respondents. “The study noted a longitudinal association between food insecurity and memory ...
Dive Brief Medtronic has found a cybersecurity vulnerability in an optional messaging feature in its Paceart Optima cardiac device data workflow system and reported the problem to the U.S. Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency. Medtronic has not observed any unauthorized access or patient harm related to the issue, the device maker said in an emailed statement. The company said it has notified healthcare delivery organizations about the vulnerability and has provided them with instructions to eliminate it. Dive Insight The number of data breaches in healthcare continues to climb as the industry has become a prime target for cyber criminals who seek to access its troves of patient information. As more connected medical devices make their way into patient homes, ransomware, phishing and software vulnerabilities are among the biggest challenges facing the sector. Medtronic’s Paceart Optima software application, which runs on a hospital’s Windows server, collects cardiac device data from ...
Dive Brief MedTech Europe has set out its vision for cybersecurity in the medical technology ecosystem in a paper that argues for industry-specific legislation. The trade group outlines three areas of discussion, starting with its belief that medtech security should be regulated under sectoral legislation such as the Medical Devices Regulation (MDR) and In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices Regulation (IVDR). Other parts of the paper address MedTech Europe’s preferred approach for tackling ransomware and support for actions to improve digital literacy in general and cybersecurity skills in particular. Dive Insight More connected medical devices have increased the risk that hackers will access confidential data or gain the ability to modify technologies in ways that put patients at risk. As the risks increase, medical device manufacturers “continue to invest significant resources in guaranteeing state of the art cybersecurity for all their products and services,” the trade group wrote. Other groups including ...
Dr. Priyom Bose, Ph.D. By Dr. Priyom Bose, Ph.D.Apr 5 2023 Reviewed by Danielle Ellis, B.Sc. To combat the double burden of non-communicable diseases and climate change, adopting sustainable and healthy diets and transitioning to sustainable food systems is essential. To support food security and sustainable development, the Mediterranean diet (MD) has been widely recognized as a healthy nutrition and biodiversity resource. A recent Advances in Nutrition study explored biodiversity and analyzed food-plant diversity differences between the Western diet and the MD. Background The global population is expected to rise to 10.9 billion by the end of the century. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that food production must increase by almost 50% to meet consumers’ demands. Rapid population growth is often considered a threat to sustainable development, as it stresses natural resources. The existing agro-food system has also been cited as a key driver of climate change and environmental ...
Researchers from Project Insecurity unraveled the disturbing fact the millions of patient records were lying rather bare to attack from potential hackers. 18 grave vulnerabilities were discovered before OpenEMR tackled the issues.
