Eye Movements Analysis for Parkinson’s Disease

A new robotic system called OSCANN Desk has been developed by researchers at Spain’s Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) and start-up AURA Innotive Robotics. The system has been designed for the accurate analysis of eye movements in order to detect neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease.

Brain functioning data is delivered via speedy non-invasive technology by using imaging processing and machine learning, anticipated to help in early diagnosis and treatments. Healthcare centers can make effective use of OSCANN Desk enabling personnel to perform specific calibration and clinical tests needing a time-frame of around one minute.

Eye movement can be measured by the medical device attached to a patient’s anatomy while they look at the stimulus displayed on a monitor. Researchers have used these tests for the creation of pathology models. Machine learning techniques were then applied by the team for the identification of similarities and differences amongst more than 500 multivariate of eye motion. The team concluded that a similar approach can be deployed for the objective measurement of certain symptoms.

Application of the tests has already been implemented for mild cognitive impairment, multiple sclerosis, diverse dementias, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.
