According to recent foreign media reports, Olympus and Canon Medical have jointly announced the official launch of the Aplio i800 EUS high-end endoscopic ultrasound system in the US market.
In 2024, Olympus and Canon Medical announced a partnership on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) technology. This collaboration, centered on the Aplio i800, aims to provide the market with advanced endoscopic ultrasound equipment to facilitate high-quality image diagnosis.
The Aplio i800 EUS is manufactured by Canon and exclusively distributed by Olympus. The addition of this system further enriches Olympus' comprehensive portfolio of endoscopes and endoscopic therapeutic instruments. This system supports high-quality imaging in a wide range of endoscopic ultrasound procedures and provides reliable data for clinical evaluation.
Canon's ultrasound platform features imaging technology that helps diagnose lesions in the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas, including liver and pancreatic diseases that are difficult to diagnose due to their complex anatomical location.
The Aplio i800's flexible design enables efficient operation within the operating room. Clinicians can customize the system to suit their operational needs and preferences. The system's functionality covers liver, pancreas, and gastrointestinal procedures.
Its features include: Differential Tissue Harmonic Imaging (D-THI), used to extend the platform's effective bandwidth, achieving deeper penetration, higher resolution, and higher sensitivity simultaneously in both shallow and deep regions. Furthermore, the fast scanning function supports one-click automatic gain adjustment to obtain uniform and consistent images. The system also possesses global focusing capability, ensuring clear and uniform imaging from the near field to the far field without the need for manual focus adjustment.
Regarding the launch of this groundbreaking product, Patrick Romano, Regional Head and Vice President of Gastrointestinal Solutions at Olympus America, stated: "The Aplio i800 EUS system enhances the capabilities of our ultrasound portfolio, enabling clinicians to achieve more efficient workflows and more reliable diagnoses in complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic anatomy."
It is worth noting that Olympus has recently undergone a series of adjustments, with changes to its four major positions: Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), Chief Manufacturing and Supply Officer (CMSO), and President of the Americas Region. All appointments officially took effect on April 1.
It is understood that Olympus is continuing to advance its new corporate strategy, which will be launched at the end of 2025. This strategy primarily encompasses three major development directions for Olympus's future: independent research and development of disposable endoscopes, iterative innovation of traditional endoscope series, and continued investment in robotics technology. At the same time, Olympus will also streamline processes, enhance team capabilities, and promote sustainable development.
As part of the new operating model, Olympus streamlined its leadership structure by appointing a president for each of its five global regions. All regional presidents report to Bob White, Director, Representative Executive Officer, President and CEO of Olympus Corporation.
