A global recall for blood pressure drugs has been issued by Accord Healthcare, since they contain a heart failure drug.

Oral consumption of 12.5 mg hydrochlorothiazide tablets is used to treat high blood pressure. Recently during the export of one lot of 100-count bottles, it was discovered that the lot contains spironolactone tablets. The company believed that no other lot was involved in this confusion. Hence, Accord Healthcare recalled the lot since spironolactone pills can immediately alter the potassium levels, which leads to life threatening issues. Though spironolactone is used to treat liver cirrhosis and heart failure, it should be consumed only under doctor’s recommendation.

The US- Food and Drug Administration said that it was a pharmacist, who first alerted Accord Healthcare to the issue. Later Accord Healthcare said that it had not received any reports of injuries due to this issue.

The hydrochlorothiazide pills are peach or light orange  in colour. They are round shaped, which has an ‘H’ on one side and a ‘1’ on other side. The US-FDA announced that if the prescription and the pills in bottle do not match this above description, it is strongly recommended to return them back to the physician or pharmacist. The FDA says, “If you are certain your bottle contains the wrong pills, return them to your pharmacy.”
