A type of physical discomfort where the pain occurs during sexual intercourse is termed as dyspareunia. Even after intercourse, this throbbing pain may last for hours. Pain might occur due to lack of lubrication or infection in genital area. Other emotional causes like stress or history of sexual abuse may also play a major role. Females are more affected compared to males. Sometimes the condition of dyspareunia is often mistaken for lack of interest in the relationship which might cause emotional distress and greater misunderstandings.

It’s high time not to feel shy and the need of the hour is to follow five treatment options listed below, to improve sexual life and emotional intimacy.

  • Antibiotic treatment: The major cause of dyspareunia in women is pelvic inflammatory diseases (PID) which is caused due to microbial infections. Hence, the administration of proper antibiotic treatment can cure PID and dyspareunia.
  • Psychological therapy: Psychological counseling and drug therapy can cure vaginismus, an abnormal contraction of the vaginal walls during sexual intercourse that occurs due to fear of past traumatic sexual experiences.
  • Removal of intra-uterine devices: Intra-uterine birth control devices like Copper-T can lead to inflammation of pelvic region, which causes dyspareunia. Hence, it would be better to remove them after consulting your gynecologist.
  • Vaginal dilation: Growth of an abnormal cartilaginous hymen which narrows the vaginal opening and ruptures during the first vaginal intercourse. Surgical dilatation of the vagina and excision of the hymen can solve the issue.
  • Urological treatment: Dysfunction or diseases of the prostate gland and urethra in males leads to dyspareunia, which should be treated.
  • Surgical intervention: Tightness of the foreskin causes immense pressure on the penis during erection. Surgical circumcision of the foreskin can help in relieving the pain.
