Prescriptions ordered via the app are expected to save around 1.85 million hours in 2024 NHS England has announced that its new digital prescription service has been added to the NHS App. The launch of the service follows a successful trial last year that involved over a million users. In alignment with the NHS campaign to encourage more people to use the app, the digital prescription service will allow millions of patients to see when their prescriptions have been issued and will allow them to view their prescribed medication. Patients who are waiting for an elective hospital treatment will also be able to see the average waiting time for their procedure at their local trust. Users without a nominated pharmacy will be given a barcode via the app to collect their prescription from any pharmacy, as opposed to using a paper version. The Covid-19 pandemic was a teachable moment for the medical device industry. It laid bare to vulnerabilities within the U.S. healthcare system, including how quickly our supply chain can be disrupted, the impacts on medical inventory and stockpiles of personal protection equipment (PPE), and staff shortages. In a survey by Ernst & Young, 57% of companies admitted facing serious disruptions during these times. In an industry where medical supply inventory is mission-critical, and disruption is not an option, it is important to revisit your health plan and pivot in strategies so when these unforeseen events occur, you are ready for anything that comes your way. From physical to digital Right now, considerable preparation is shoring up the physical equipment supply chain for frontline workers and patients. Truth be told, the impacts of having a digital health production plan are significant. While digital stockpiling is still an undervalued strategy among medical ...
The word has gained greater urgency in recent years as the consumer trend in healthcare has forced payers, providers and all other kinds of healthcare stakeholders to swear by it. By ARUNDHATI PARMAR In a space of five minutes in the roughly 12:30-minute presentation on CVS Health at the 42nd annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare conference in San Francisco on Monday, Karen Lynch said a version of the word “transparency” six times. No surprises for guessing they were all largely in the context of pharmacy benefit management and pharmacy reimbursement models. “… we introduced CVS Caremark TrueCost, which is a new PBM model that will be available to our customers and our clients that strives for greater transparency for our consumers and offers a simplified pricing model,” Lynch said, underscoring what concrete steps the company is taking amidst withering scrutiny of PBMs. CVS Caremark expects to launch the TrueCost model for ...
Biopharma companies that provide healthcare professionals (HCPs) with compliant chat channels benefit from increased engagement, according (PDF) to Veeva Systems. Analyzing interactions captured in its customer relationship management platform, Veeva found HCPs start 30% of conversations with reps when a compliant chat channel is available. The software provider framed the use of the channels by HCPs in light of the rise of precision therapies, saying the focus on smaller patient populations means physicians have questions when they come to start patients on drugs. Inbound channels offer HCPs a way to get answers to questions about reimbursement, site certification and more. Veeva found that, on average, reps can respond to queries in compliant chat channels in less than five minutes and use the medium to arrange samples for new patient starts and schedule meetings. Text messaging and standalone chat apps may also support timely responses but in the view of Veeva, ...

Executives at LRVHealth expect to see a continued focus on generative AI, increased enrollment in Medicare Advantage and more in 2024. By MARISSA PLESCIA The healthcare landscape in 2024 presents some interesting challenges and opportunities, whether it’s in regards to generative AI or value-based care, according to executives at LRVHealth, a healthcare venture capital firm. These executives shared five predictions for 2024 with MedCity News: 1. Generative AI will become a reality: Generative AI will become more than “just hopes, dreams and pilot programs” in 2024, according to Keith Figlioli, managing partner at LRVHealth. The healthcare industry will start to actually put AI into practice next year. However, there will be some challenges, as well. 2. “We’ll see at least one event around bias or misuse of generative AI in clinical delivery,” Figlioli said. “Most healthcare companies aren’t applying generative AI to personal health information (PHI), but this event will ...
To identify true growth opportunities, investors must consider how companies are using AI to revolutionize the treatment journey. Some companies are doing just that via Software as a Medical Device (SaMD), particularly by developing prescription digital therapeutics (PDTs). By DAVID B. KLEIN The excitement around artificial intelligence has been palpable for some time, dominating industry discussions and mobilizing capital for investment opportunities, but as of late, there’s been a change in the air. The optimism that reached a fever pitch in the first half of the year has dissipated. Now begins the hard work of sorting through what it all means. As the healthcare industry responds to the burgeoning opportunities AI presents, especially in developing new, more effective therapeutics and enabling access to treatment, it’s critical that investors prioritize proof over positivity. They must determine if a company’s AI strategy will lead to a high return on investment, or if ...
In recent years there has been a downward trend in health care provider (HCP) contact in the pharmaceutical industry with 65% of HCPs limiting access to three or fewer companies, said Aaron Bean, the vice president of commercial business consulting at Veeva Europe. At the Veeva Commercial Summit 2023, Bean discussed HCP engagement with the pharmaceutical sector at a media roundtable. He suggested that HCPs’ increased selectiveness could be a result of increased “time pressure” and changes in the way they consume information. Bean was presenting data from Veeva’s February 2023 Pulse Field Trends Report which showed geographic differences in HCP engagement. In data taken from April to September 2022 from European countries, the UK led the shift with 94% of HCPs only contacting three or fewer pharmaceutical companies, compared to 50% in Spain. The same dataset showed that differences also appeared when comparing therapy areas. In oncology, approximately 25% ...
Digital health companies often start in the commercial market and thereafter target Medicaid plans. But not all startups are suited to serve the Medicaid population, according to Dr. Pooja Mittal, vice president and chief health equity officer at Health Net. That’s why Health Net created a vetting process to understand which companies have the potential to be the most effective with Medicaid members. The California-based insurer offers health plans for individuals, families and businesses and has three million members, including those who qualify for Medi-Cal or Medicare. Mittal noted that when the company started bringing in new vendors about four or five years ago, some were very successful working with its Medicaid population, while others struggled with engagement. “What we realized was that there were a lot of companies that didn’t have experience in the Medicaid space that were trying to enter into that space without a good understanding of ...
