Viela Bio announced today that it has incorporated as an independent, inflammation - and autoimmunity - focused biotechnology company after spinning out from MedImmune, the global biologics research and development arm of AstraZeneca. Viela Bio will primarily focus on developing medicines for severe autoimmune diseases by targeting critical pathways that are the root cause of the diseases.
Researchers at EPFL have created artificial molecules that can help the immune system to recognize and attack cancer tumors. The study is published in Nature Methods. Immunotherapies are breakthrough treatments that stimulate the patient’s immune cells to attack the tumor through the recognition of aberrant molecules called tumor antigens. They can be very effective, but currently can only cure a minority of patients with solid tumors. Researchers and physicians are now looking into ways of increasing the precision and strength of the immune attack on the tumor. Dendritic cell vaccines One approach is the “dendritic cell vaccine”. Dendritic cells are specialized immune cells whose role is to capture antigens from foreign bodies and present them to the immune system’s killer T cells, which will then attack and destroy the invaders. For the vaccine, dendritic cells are taken out of the patient, “force-fed” with tumor antigens, and finally re-injected back into ...

Mount Sinai researchers have discovered that normal immune cells called macrophages, which reside in healthy breast tissue surrounding milk ducts, play a major role in helping early breast cancer cells leave the breast for other parts of the body, potentially creating metastasis before a tumor has even developed, according to a study published in Nature Communications.
A 10-month-old boy born without an immune system has been confined to his sanitized home his entire life and only leaves for doctor's visits. Sebastian Romero was diagnosed with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) at two weeks old, a rare genetic disorder known as 'bubble boy' disease that left him with no infection-fighting cells.
A new report has found that there are more than 2,000 immunotherapy drugs now in development for cancer, with 940 of these in clinical stage development and 1,064 at the preclinical stage.
Biogen (NASDAQ: BIIB) announced that it has increased the profit potential on aducanumab, its Phase 3 investigational treatment for early Alzheimer’s disease, by reducing the potential royalty payment on potential commercial sales of aducanumab to Neurimmune Holding AG. AbbVie (ABBV), a global biopharmaceutical company, and Alector, a privately owned biotechnology company, announced a global strategic collaboration to develop and commercialize medicines to treat Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.
High cholesterol levels have been associated with breast cancer spreading to other sites in the body, but doctors and researchers don't know the cause for the link. A new study by University of Illinois researchers found that the culprit is a byproduct of cholesterol metabolism that acts on specific immune cells so that they facilitate the cancer's spread instead of stopping it.
