In an amicus brief filed Monday, the FTC rebuts aspects of Medtronic’s defense against accusations made by Applied Medical Resources in an antitrust case. The FTC has taken no position on the accuracy of the allegations but filed the brief because it said Medtronic made “wrong” arguments with “broad implications for antitrust enforcement” in its filing to dismiss Applied’s claims. Researchers from University of California San Diego have found a way to distinguish among hand gestures that people are making by examining only data from noninvasive brain imaging, without information from the hands themselves. The results are an early step in developing a non-invasive brain-computer interface that may one day allow patients with paralysis, amputated limbs or other physical challenges to use their mind to control a device that assists with everyday tasks. Abbott (NYSE:ABT) today announced that it received FDA clearance for its Assert-IQ insertable cardiac monitor (ICM). The Assert-IQ device offers a new option for diagnostic evaluation and long-term monitoring for irregular heartbeats. It supplements Abbott’s portfolio of connected health devices for managing and treating patients remotely. The device could potentially rival the Medtronic Linq system. A small device with sensors inserted just under the skin of the chest, Assert-IQ provides constant, real-time monitoring. It can detect and identify arrhythmias that lead to symptoms like fainting, irregular pulse and shortness of breath. Abbott says many commercially available ICMs monitor hearts for “a few years,” but Assert-IQ offers two options. The work by a team including researchers at the University of California, Davis, Stanford University and Envivo Bio Inc., is published May 10 in papers in Nature and Nature Metabolism. Most of the process of digestion takes place in our small intestine, where enzymes break down food so it can be absorbed through the gut wall. “The small intestine has so far only been accessible in sedated people who have fasted, and that’s not very helpful,” said Professor Oliver Fiehn, director of the West Coast Metabolomics Center at UC Davis.
