Dementias, including Alzheimer’s disease, are estimated to affect 944,000 people in the UK Researchers from University College London (UCL) have revealed that cardiovascular health could be the biggest risk factor associated with future dementia. Published in the Lancet Public Health, the study was funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research’s Three Schools’ Dementia Research Programme. Estimated to affect 944,000 people in the UK, dementia is a general term for the impaired ability to remember, think, or make decisions that affects everyday life. The most prevalent dementias include Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia and frontotemporal dementia. Researchers analysed and extracted data from 27 papers involving people with dementia worldwide, with data collected between 1947 and 2015 and the latest paper published in 2020. The extracted information from each paper about dementia risk factors was then used to calculate what proportion of dementia cases were attributable to ...
Don Tracy, Associate Editor Results from three randomized clinical trials show safety and efficacy of a brexpiprazole-sertraline combination in adult patients with post-traumatic stress disorder. The FDA has accepted Otsuka and Lunbdeck’s supplemental New Drug Application for brexpiprazole in combination with sertraline for the treatment of adults with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The sNDA is supported by data from three randomized clinical trials that evaluated the safety and efficacy of the brexpiprazole-sertraline combination in adult patients with PTSD.1 “[PTSD] is one of the most common mental health disorders in the United States. Approximately 13 million adults in the US have PTSD during a given year, and between seven to eight out of every 100 will experience PTSD at some point in their lives,” said John Kraus, MD, PhD, EVP, chief medical officer, Otsuka, in a press release. “This is a significant development, and we look forward to continuing our efforts ...

It’s time we move beyond BMI and adopt a holistic approach to truly gauge health. By Gretchen Zimmermann Body Mass Index (BMI) has long been regarded as a standard measure for assessing weight-related health risks and, more recently, determining eligibility for anti-obesity medications like GLP-1 receptor agonists semaglutide (Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Zepbound), according to the FDA. BMI, calculated from weight and height, offers a simplistic yet flawed assessment of health. It was initially designed for non-Hispanic white populations and overlooks nuances like muscle mass, fat distribution, and ethnic background, which can influence certain risk factors. It’s an antiquated measure that perpetuates inequities in healthcare and misses the mark for calculating cardiometabolic conditions. The perception that a “normal” BMI is ideal and an “overweight to obese” BMI is not ideal only exacerbates bias within the medical community and complicates our efforts to solve the obesity crisis. Individuals with an overweight to ...
Mike Hollan Tava’s network of therapists will be added to Health Advocate’s existing network. While the service existed beforehand, the pandemic pushed telehealth into the spotlight. For many patients, it wasn’t just safer to be able to visit a doctor from the comfort of their own home, it was much simpler. This is especially true for patients visiting their regular doctors for recurring conditions. Due to the pre-existing relationship, doctors can often provide the necessary prescriptions based off of a description of symptoms alone. As the pandemic receded, the value of teletherapy remained. Since then, more and more companies are working to expand access to teletherapy services. Health Advocate announced that it has partnered with Tava Health to expand its access to telehealth.1 This partnership will allow members of Health Advocate to access Tava Health’s nationwide network of therapists. These new therapists will be added to Health Advocate’s existing network ...
The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the launch of a generative artificial intelligence (AI)-powered digital health promoter prototype ahead of World Health Day on 7 April. Celebrated annually, World Health Day draws attention to a specific health topic of concern to people globally. This year’s theme, ‘My Health, My Right’, champions the right of everyone, everywhere to have access to quality health services, education and information. The Smart AI Resource Assistant for Health (SARAH) will comprise new language models and cutting-edge technology to engage users across major health topics, including healthy habits and mental health. SARAH aims to provide an additional tool for people to learn their rights to health, by supporting them in developing a better understanding of risk factors for some of the leading causes of death worldwide, including cancer, heart disease, lung disease and diabetes. In addition, the AI assistant can help individuals access up-to-date information ...
Alterations in human DNA range from minor single nucleotide variations to substantial alterations involving the deletion or duplication of extensive DNA segments, known as copy number variations (CNVs). While CNVs contribute significantly to human genetic diversity and are often harmless, they can also lead to various neurodevelopmental disorders like Angelman syndrome, DiGeorge syndrome, and Williams-Beuren syndrome. Children suspected of having genetic conditions due to these significant DNA deletions or duplications typically undergo a lengthy diagnostic process that begins with microarray testing and may advance to more comprehensive genome-wide sequencing tests, such as exome or genome sequencing. Detecting CNVs in sequencing data and interpreting them can be challenging for clinical teams, which is why microarrays are commonly employed. Scientists have now created a single approach to identify these structural alterations using data from genome-wide exome sequencing assays. The findings of the study by researchers from the Wellcome Sanger Institute (Cambridgeshire, UK) ...
