Type 2 diabetes is estimated to affect 462 million people worldwide An international academic consortium led by Johns Hopkins University, US, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Lund University, Sweden, has identified 13 biomarkers that improve the ability to accurately predict the risk of cardiovascular disease in people with type 2 diabetes. The study was conducted by 23 experts across 11 countries as part of an international partnership between the American Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, the Precision Medicine in Diabetes Initiative. Estimated to affect around 462 million people globally, type 2 diabetes is a condition that causes too much sugar in the blood. Patients living with the condition are two times more likely to go on to develop cardiovascular disease compared to those without diabetes. Researchers reviewed and analysed the medical studies published from 1990 onward that investigated the differences between people ...

A new guide from Northeast Business Group on Health helps employers understand the challenges women face when it comes to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. It also recommends actions that employers can take to support women in their workforce. By MARISSA PLESCIA About 44% of women in the U.S. are living with a form of heart disease, and heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the U.S. Making matters worse is the lack of knowledge about these stats: only 56% of women realize that heart disease is the number one killer for American women. Cardiovascular disease in the U.S. costs about $363 billion annually in direct and indirect costs (such as missed workdays). That’s why the Northeast Business Group on Health (NEBGH) released a free guide for employers on Thursday that is focused on cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity in women. New York City-based NEBGH is ...
NeuroOne Medical Technologies (Nasdaq:NMTC) announced that it appointed Christopher R. Volker as its chief operating officer (COO). Volker joins the Eden Prairie, Minnesota-based neurotech company from Abbott. He previously served as VP and GM of international at Cardiovascular Systems (CSI), which Abbott acquired earlier this year. “Chris’ appointment further strengthens our executive leadership team and deepens our capabilities as we build for future commercial growth and expansion into other clinical applications,” said NeuroOne CEO Dave Rosa. “We are excited to benefit from his broad experience in business development, commercial expansion, finance and health economics, and reimbursement.”NeuroOne commercially launched its Evo sEEG electrode line in the U.S. earlier this year. By Meg Tirrell, CNN The weight loss drug Wegovy was shown to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke or heart-related death by 20% in what’s being called a landmark clinical trial in people with cardiovascular disease, the first to show a weight loss drug alone can have such protective effects. Novo Nordisk studied Wegovy against placebo in addition to standard of care for prevention of major adverse cardiac events in 17,604 adults with heart disease and obesity or who were overweight, but who didn’t have diabetes. It called the five-year trial “Select.” The finding of a 20% reduction in heart risk is higher than many experts had anticipated. A similar trial for the type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic, which uses the same ingredient, semaglutide, previously showed it could reduce cardiovascular risk by 26% — but no trial had yet shown a risk reduction in people without diabetes. “Historically, trials ...
A pair of new studies presented as abstracts today at the American Society of Nutrition (ASN) annual meeting report that daily prune consumption has promising effects on several biomarkers related to cardiovascular health. Conducted in postmenopausal women and men 55 years and older, the studies reveal: In men, long-term prune consumption improved HDL cholesterol and the total cholesterol to HDL ratio, while decreasing oxidative stress and the inflammatory biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP). In older women, long-term prune consumption had no negative effect on various metabolic measures related to heart disease risk including total cholesterol, total triglycerides, fasting glucose, and insulin levels. The results of both studies were presented at the ASN annual flagship meeting in Boston, MA. The ASN convenes researchers, practitioners, global and public health professionals, policymakers and advocacy leaders, industry, media, and other related professionals to advance nutrition science and its practical application. “Currently, there ...
A study led by McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences researchers at the Population Research Health Institute (PHRI) has found that not eating enough of six key foods in combination is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adults. Consuming fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, fish and whole-fat dairy products is key to lowering the risk of CVD, including heart attacks and strokes. The study also found that a healthy diet can be achieved in various ways, such as including moderate amounts of whole grains or unprocessed meats. Previous and similar research has focused on Western countries and diets that combined harmful, ultra-processed foods with nutrient-dense foods. This research was global in scope and focused on foods commonly considered to be healthy. The World Health Organization estimates nearly 18 million people died from CVD in 2019, representing 32 percent of all global deaths. Of these deaths, 85 percent ...
Loneliness is a bigger risk factor for heart disease in patients with diabetes than diet, exercise, smoking and depression, according to research published June 29 in the European Heart Journal,. “The quality of social contact appears to be more important for heart health in people with diabetes than the number of engagements,” said study author Professor Lu Qi of Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, New Orleans. “We should not downplay the important of loneliness on physical and emotional health. I would encourage patients with diabetes who feel lonely to join a group or class and try to make friends with people who have shared interests.” “Loneliness and social isolation are common in today’s societies and have become a research focus during the last years, especially driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and the continuous digitalization of society,” state Kahl and colleagues in an accompanying editorial. Loneliness refers ...
Vitamin D supplements may reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attacks among people aged over 60, finds a clinical trial published by The BMJ. The researchers stress that the absolute risk difference was small, but say this is the largest trial of its kind to date, and further evaluation is warranted, particularly in people taking statins or other cardiovascular disease drugs. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term for conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels and is one of the main causes of death globally. CVD events such as heart attacks and strokes are set to increase as populations continue to age and chronic diseases become more common. Observational studies have consistently shown a link between vitamin D levels and CVD risk, but randomized controlled trials have found no evidence that vitamin D supplements prevent cardiovascular events, possibly due to differences in trial design that ...
