Coloplast launches digital leakage notification system Heylo for stoma patients

More than 176,000 people in the UK are living with a stoma, according to NHS data Coloplast has announced the launch of its world-first digital leakage notification system, Heylo, to benefit patients living with a stoma. The new system is now available through the NHS to help alleviate the physical and mental burden of leakage in patients living with a stoma, following an individual consultation and assessment of leakage anxiety. According to NHS data, more than 176,000 people in the UK are living with a stoma, an opening on the abdomen that can be connected to either the digestive or urinary system to remove waste from the body. The most common conditions that can result in stoma surgery include colorectal cancer, bladder cancer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and accidental injury. EMA approval of Sanofi/Regeneron’s Dupixent fills biologic gap in COPD

UK dementia organisations publish new manifesto ahead of general election

Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia UK, Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) and Alzheimer Scotland have collaborated to create a new manifesto for dementia, ahead of the 2024 general election (4 July). The new manifesto, ‘Dementia: a manifesto’, calls on the next UK government to make dementia a key health priority in the UK. Affecting 982,000 people in the UK, dementia is a term for the impaired ability to remember, think or make decisions in day-to-day life. There is currently no cure available and the care and treatment options that currently exist for patients living with the neurodegenerative disease are often disjointed, inaccessible and inadequate. New insights into physical activity adoption for rheumatic patients

An HPR abstract sessions at the 2024 EULAR congress looked specifically at harnessing the benefits of exercise in rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMD) – and the challenges to their practical implementation. Mohamed Saadi presented a systematic review examining barriers and facilitators affecting adherence to EULAR’s physical activity recommendations. Across 68 selected articles, 29 different themes were identified – 9 of which were social, 16 environmental, and 4 systemic. The five most frequently found themes were having supportive family and friends, a supportive health professional, followed by costs, and access or proximity to adapted and supervised programs. Importantly, there may be country-level differences in these three key factors. Social considerations include the level of support available, as well as whether people feel social pressure or body shaming, and if they have social physical activity built into their everyday lives – such as walking a dog or playing with children. Despite its effectiveness, this method can be cumbersome, slow, and costly.
