Just last week, GLP-1 giant Novo Nordisk promised a supply boost of its in-demand obesity med Wegovy after lining up a second contract manufacturer. Now, though, the company is “temporarily” reducing U.S. supply of lower dosage strengths to “safeguard continuity of care,” the company said in a statement. The company sees a “short-term need” to cut back on starter doses of the drug,” CEO Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen said on the company’s first-quarter earnings call Thursday. The CEO added that manufacturing is “running well” and that the reduction will play out over a “limited period.” “We’re not out of the market with the low dose strengths. We’re just reducing supply,” Jørgensen said, noting that patients will still be able to get the product, just possibly with a longer wait time. Meanwhile, the Danish drugmaker posted huge obesity revenue gains of 124% versus last year’s first quarter, rising to 7.8 billion ...
Acelyrin has raised $540 million in an initial public offering, the largest for a biotechnology startup since early 2021 and one of only a handful by young drugmakers this year. The company said Thursday it sold 30 million shares at $18 apiece, exceeding the projections it set earlier this week. It will start trading Friday on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “SLRN.” The pace of biotech IPOs has slowed considerably since 2021, when a record 104 startups flooded Wall Street, according to data compiled by BioPharma Dive. The following year, the number of new stock offerings fell by about 80%. Until this week, only five companies had priced a new offering in 2023, the sector’s slowest start in at least five years. The value of those offerings has also trended downwards. Prior to Acelyrin’s offering, nine of the last 15 biotech startups that went public raised $15 million or ...
In a recent study published in the journal Vascular Health and Risk Management, researchers discuss the various non-traditional and traditional practices, as well as the socioeconomic and food insecurity-related limitations associated with adopting diets for heart health. Background Despite considerable progress in medicine and dietary interventions that have improved cardiovascular health, cardiovascular disease remains one of the most prevalent causes of mortality in the United States. Early studies on the association between diet and cardiovascular health reported that a diet rich in fish, vegetables, grains, fruits, and beans was linked to a lower rate of myocardial infarctions. Moreover, the consumption of vegetables and fruits, along with regular exercise, was associated with 40% lower rates of myocardial infarction. Hypertension, excess abdominal fat, dyslipidemia, and type 2 diabetes are some of the risk factors for cardiometabolic diseases that can be modified through changes in the diet. In the U.S., ...
Through data-analysis, researchers found that people taking long siestas had higher body mass indexes and were more likely to have metabolic syndrome than those who did not take siestas. It is a common custom in some countries for individuals to take a siesta or midday nap. Sleeping during the middle of the day has the potential to affect sleep quality, cognitive function, and metabolic processes. However, the relationship between siestas and metabolic health is not well understood. A new study led by investigators from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a founding member of the Mass General Brigham healthcare system, assessed more than 3,000 adults from a Mediterranean population, examining the relationship of siestas and siesta duration with obesity and metabolic syndrome. The researchers found that those who took siestas of 30 minutes or longer (long siestas) were more likely to have a higher body mass index, higher blood pressure, and ...
In a recent study published in the American Journal of Preventive Cardiology, researchers explored the impact of ketogenic dieting on low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. Background Due to the escalating obesity levels, the ketogenic (keto) diet has been studied as a potential remedy for overweight patients’ deteriorating weight gain, cardiovascular outcomes, and insulin resistance. Though popular as a comparatively safe, non-pharmaceutical therapy, the long-term effects of the keto diet for weight loss are not fully understood, and most professional medical societies do not advise this regimen. Some individuals on a ketogenic diet may experience a significant rise in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels due to its high saturated fatty acid content. About the study In the present study, researchers described a cohort of patients whose LDL-cholesterol levels rose to an unprecedented level after beginning a ketogenic diet. The team evaluated medical records of patients who ...
The drug is available in 27 markets, with worldwide sales totalling over $139m in 2022. Eli Lilly will sell its low blood sugar drug Baqsimi to Amphastar Pharmaceuticals in a deal worth over $1bn, the two companies announced. Under the terms of the definitive agreement, Amphastar will pay Lilly $500m at closing and an additional $125m after one year, with Lilly also eligible to receive sales-based milestone payments of up to $450m. Baqsimi is the first and only nasally administered glucagon to treat severe hypoglycaemia – very low blood sugar – in diabetes patients aged four years and above. Classed as a diabetic emergency, severe hypoglycaemia is a complication that can occur in diabetes patients who take insulin and certain anti-diabetic tablets. The condition is characterised by altered mental or physical functioning, including confusion and disorientation, convulsions, loss of consciousness and coma. Lilly launched Baqsimi ...
French fries — they’re greasy, starchy and a comfort food for many. But reaching for fried foods may have a negative impact on mental health. A research team in Hangzhou, China, found that frequent consumption of fried foods, especially fried potatoes, was linked with a 12% higher risk of anxiety and 7% higher risk of depression than in people who didn’t eat fried foods. The link was more pronounced among young men and younger consumers. Fried foods are known risk factors for obesity, high blood pressure and other health effects. These results “open an avenue in the significance of reducing fried food consumption for mental health,” according to the paper published Monday in the journal PNAS. However, experts who study nutrition said the results are preliminary, and it’s not necessarily clear whether the fried foods were driving mental health issues, or people experiencing symptoms of ...
The high rate of obesity has become a growing problem in the modern world. Obesity is associated with the incidence of several comorbidities, such as cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Despite weight loss being considered the most important remedy for obesity, long-term weight maintenance is also important. Background Metabolic adaptation, i.e., adaptive thermogenesis (AT), could be the key factor preventing long-term weight-loss maintenance. AT causes a decrease in energy expenditure, which is significantly more than the predictions based on reductions in fat mass (FM) or fat-free mass (FFM). Energy expenditure adaptations have been found to last multiple years after a weight loss period. Therefore, after weight loss, a reduction in AT is extremely important for long-term weight loss maintenance. Some factors have been identified to reduce AT, such as physical activity, cold-induced brown adipose tissue activation, tea catechins, and capsaicinoids. Furthermore, high protein (HP) intake was also ...
Arterial stiffness may be a novel risk factor for metabolic syndrome in teens, a paper published in the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology concludes. The study was conducted in collaboration between the University of Bristol in the UK, the University of Exeter in the UK, and the University of Eastern Finland. The presence of any three of high blood pressure, high trunk fat mass, high fasting glucose, high fasting triglyceride and low fasting high-density lipoprotein cholesterol describes metabolic syndrome. Arterial stiffness in adolescents measured with carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity may potentially cause metabolic syndrome in young adulthood via an increase in fasting insulin resistance and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Image Credit: Andrew Agbaje. The World Health Organization describes metabolic syndrome as the constellation of three or more of the following: abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in US middle-aged adults is 30%, ...
In a recent study published in Preventive Medicine Reports Journal, researchers performed a randomized clinical trial (RCT) to investigate whether adhering to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) with or without limiting calorie intake could improve cognition. Background Obesity, lifestyle choices including diet and exercise, and cardiometabolic comorbidities elevate the risk of cognitive decline. To date, there are no efficient pharmaceutical therapeutics available to prevent, retard, or manage cognitive deficits. However, studies have shown that MedDiet and weight loss benefit cognition, and combining the two may enhance cognitive function. However, RCTs have shown inconsistent results, with either a favorable or negligible impact of nutrition on cognition, warranting further research. About the study In the present three-arm RCT, researchers evaluated the potential cognitive benefit of adhering to MedDiet with or without limiting calorie intake. The Building Research in Diet and Cognition study was conducted between January 2017 and ...
