Mike Hollan The medical side of the market is growing while the commercial side seems to be struggling. A new study reveals just how strong of a year 2023 was for the weight loss drug industry. Anti-obesity medications (AOMs) have seen a surge in popularity over the past year. This is due to a variety of factors, including the increase in demand for drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic. The two drugs became so popular in 2023 that Wegovy’s developer Novo Nordisk had to temporarily limit the supply of lower, beginner doses of the medication. While it’s clear that AOMs had a good year in 2023, a new report details the heights of that success. According to a study conducted Marketdata LLC and published in Research and Markets, the weight loss market in 2023 rose to a historic peak. In a press release,1 Research and Markets explains that the boom in ...
The neurodevelopmental condition affects up to four in 100 children A new study led by researchers at University College London (UCL) and other collaborators has revealed that adults who experienced amblyopia as children are more likely to experience serious diseases in adulthood. Published in eClinicalMedicine, the study was funded by the Medical Research Council, the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the Ulverscroft Foundation. Affecting up to four in 100 children, amblyopia, otherwise known as a ‘lazy eye,’ is a neurodevelopmental condition where the vision in one eye does not develop properly, caused by a breakdown in how the brain and eye work together. Carried out alongside seven other collaborators, including King’s College London, the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and Great Ormond Street Hospital, researchers analysed more than 126,000 people aged 40 to 69 years from the UK Biobank cohort who had an ocular examination. Out of ...
An experimental Novo Nordisk obesity pill led to weight loss of 13.1% in a clinical trial, topping results posted in studies of the company’s approved injectable medication Wegovy. It’s early days and more testing is needed, but the preliminary data suggest that this pill has the potential to offer patients superior weight shedding in a more convenient oral formulation. Phase 1 data for the once-daily Novo Nordisk pill, amycretin, were presented Thursday during a company investor event. The study followed participants for 12 weeks. In that span, those who received a placebo lost 1.1% of their body weight. Wegovy, which is administered as a once-weekly injection, was not part of this clinical trial. Published clinical trial results for that drug show it led to weight loss of 5.9% measured at 12 weeks. Wegovy, whose main ingredient is the peptide semaglutide, offers one mechanism of action: activating the GLP-1 receptor to ...
Novo Nordisk reported its weight loss pill amycretin led to greater weight loss measured at 12 weeks compared to clinical trial results for its blockbuster obesity drug Wegovy. But these results are from a small Phase 1 study and more testing is needed. The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), as part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), has announced that all ten pharmaceutical manufacturers taking part in the Medicare drug price negotiations have submitted counteroffers. The announcement comes after the HHS sent initial offers on 1 February in an ongoing effort to lower drug prices in the US as part of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and negotiations will continue over the next several months. First selected last August, the ten medicines subject to the first round of Medicare pricing negotiations included therapies for diabetes, heart failure, immunological disorders and cancer, as well as anticoagulants. The medicines selected included Bristol Myers Squibb/Pfizer’s Eliquis (apixaban), Novartis’ Entresto (valsartan/sacubitril), AstraZeneca’s Farxiga (dapagliflozin), AbbVie/Johnson & Johnson’s Imbruvica (ibrutinib), Eli Lilly/Boehringer Ingelheim’s Jardiance (empagliflozin), and Johnson & Johnson’s Stelara (ustekinumab) and Xarelto (rivaroxaban). According to the HHS, collectively, the drugs were ...
Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared for marketing the first over-the-counter (OTC) continuous glucose monitor (CGM). The Dexcom Stelo Glucose Biosensor System is an integrated CGM (iCGM) intended for anyone 18 years and older who does not use insulin, such as individuals with diabetes treating their condition with oral medications, or those without diabetes who want to better understand how diet and exercise may impact blood sugar levels. Importantly, this system is not for individuals with problematic hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) as the system is not designed to alert the user to this potentially dangerous condition. “CGMs can be a powerful tool to help monitor blood glucose. Today’s clearance expands access to these devices by allowing individuals to purchase a CGM without the involvement of a health care provider,” said Jeff Shuren, M.D., J.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “Giving more individuals valuable ...
The conventional methods for measuring free cortisol, the body’s stress hormone, from blood or saliva are quite demanding and require sample processing. The most common method, therefore, involves collecting urine over several days. However, this method requires great perseverance from patients, as collecting every drop of urine over several days can be nearly impossible, even if the patients are hospitalized. This often leads to up to 60% variation in urine-free cortisol measurements in individual patients. Now, researchers have developed a new method for measuring cortisol levels directly from a blood sample, marking a significant advancement in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. Researchers from Aarhus University (Aarhus, Denmark) have discovered a groundbreaking method for measuring levels of free cortisol directly from a blood sample. This new method is simple and quick, requiring only a few drops of blood. This contrasts sharply with current practices, which are both cumbersome and ...
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasingly becoming a major health issue worldwide. For those diagnosed with CKD, the rate of disease progression can vary, with some individuals experiencing a rapid deterioration in kidney function. Healthcare providers need to spot patients who are newly diagnosed with CKD and are at a heightened risk of rapid disease progression. Early identification can allow for timely interventions that could slow down, or in some cases, prevent the progression of the disease. Now, researchers have made a breakthrough by discovering a simple method to identify individuals at high risk for rapid CKD progression, an advancement that could greatly enhance prevention and treatment strategies. In a comprehensive study, a team of researchers from Aarhus University (Aarhus, Denmark) examined the precise risk of rapid CKD progression utilizing data from Danish health registers. This study provides valuable insights for medical professionals on identifying patients who are more likely ...
Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes, are responsible for 75% of deaths worldwide. People affected by humanitarian emergencies are at increased risk of NCDs. It is estimated that strokes and heart attacks are up to 3 times more likely following a disaster. However, care and treatment for NCDs are often not included as a standard part of humanitarian emergency preparedness and response, which focus on the most immediate needs. To support integration of essential services for NCDs into emergency preparedness and humanitarian response, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Kingdom of Denmark, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Republic of Kenya, and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, are jointly convening a global high-level technical meeting on NCDs in humanitarian settings on 27-29 February in Copenhagen, Denmark. Humanitarian emergencies in recent years are becoming more complex and interconnected. Hunger and shortages of essential goods ...
