Radioactive iodine or surgery linked to decreased mortality risk in patients with hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism treatment like radioactive iodine or surgery was associated with a decreased risk for death, according to research being presented Saturday at ENDO 2023, the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in Chicago. Kristien Boelaert (M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Endocrinology, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom) said, “Hyperthyroidism or an overactive thyroid gland is common, affecting up to 3% of the population, and is associated with long-term adverse cardiac and metabolic consequences. The optimal treatment choice remains unclear.” Boelaert and colleagues identified 55,318 patients with newly diagnosed hyperthyroidism, treated with antithyroid drugs (ATD; 77.6%), radioiodine (14.6%), or thyroidectomy (7.8%) from a U.K. population-based electronic health record database for the EGRET Study. They examined all-cause mortality, major cardiovascular events (MACE: cardiovascular death, heart failure, or stroke), and post-treatment obesity. The average follow-up was roughly 12 years. Merck’s efinopegdutide shows promise in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Merck & Co – known as MSD outside the US and Canada – has said its investigational GLP-1/glucagon receptor co-agonist, efinopegdutide (MK-6024), has demonstrated promising results in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD is a chronic and progressive condition in which fat builds up in the liver. It is known as a silent disease with few or no symptoms, however, certain health conditions such as obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, increase the likelihood of developing NAFLD. There is not currently any approved medicine that can treat NAFLD, with treatment options focused on managing the problems associated with the condition. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone neurons play a key role in the response to fasting and weight loss

Regulation of thyroid hormone (TH) levels is a complex multilevel phenomenon. The paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus (the region of the brain that controls the involuntary nervous system) has been identified as a direct regulator of thyrotropin (a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that regulates the production of thyroid hormones). The PVN is a key regulator of TH levels, integrating multiple signaling systems. Novo Nordisk says in talks to acquire French device-maker Biocorp for $165M

Dive Brief Novo Nordisk said it is in exclusive talks to buy French medical device company Biocorp. Novo Nordisk will buy out Biocorp’s main shareholder, Bio Jag, for 35 euros per share, and then make a tender offer for any outstanding shares at the same price, the companies said Monday. The offer would value all of the company at 154 million euros ($165 million). Denmark-based Novo Nordisk, which makes pharmaceutical products and insulin pens, has been collaborating with Biocorp since 2021 on a smart pen cap that tracks information on dose, date and time of injection. FDA warns about compounded semaglutide-based drugs

Tyler Patchen The FDA has warned the public that compounded versions of popular GLP-1 drugs Ozempic and Wegovy may not include the same ingredients as the prescription medications, and that has raised questions about their safety and effectiveness. The regulator said Tuesday it has received reports of adverse events related to compounded versions of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy. Some products being marketed as semaglutide contain the salt formation of semaglutide, which is not considered safe or effective. Pfizer oral weight loss drug may be as effective as Ozempic injection by Novo Nordisk, study says

An oral drug made by Pfizer causes a similar amount of weight loss as rival Novo Nordisk’s blockbuster injection Ozempic, according to a peer-reviewed study of phase 2 clinical trial results released Monday. The results were presented at a medical conference late last year, and did not compare Pfizer’s drug with Ozempic or other weight loss medications. JAMA Network only now is releasing a peer-reviewed study. Pfizer’s trial followed 411 adults with Type 2 diabetes who either took the company’s pill, danuglipron, twice a day or a placebo. Body weight was “statistically significantly reduced” after patients took either 120-milligram or 80-milligram versions of danuglipron for 16 weeks, the study found. Patients who took a 120-milligram version lost around 10 pounds on average over that time period, the study found. Most effective treatment for excessive daytime sleepiness found

McMaster University researchers Dena Zeraatkar and Tyler Pitre have found that the drug solriamfetol is the most effective treatment for excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) for people with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The standard treatment for OSA is a positive airway pressure (PAP) mask that uses compressed air to support lung airways during sleep. However, some people with OSA still experience EDS and may benefit from anti-fatigue medication.
