New analysis of official records from the National Institute of Health (NIH) have revealed that just 365,000 people took part in a clinical trial for Type 2 Diabetes in 2021, despite 37.3 million people in the US living with the condition – or more than 11% of the population. By taking part in a clinical trial, people affected by conditions like diabetes can access innovative new treatments and drugs and help bring the medicines to market much faster, benefiting millions of others. The new findings were uncovered by Lindus Health, a clinical trials start-up, who analyzed the official clinical trial records across multiple diseases and found that diabetes was clearly being under-represented – with the equivalent of fewer than 1% of people affected by the disease being involved in a trial. Despite the number of people affected by diabetes, the condition is frequently overlooked in clinical trials. This is despite ...
The UK government has announced a £650m funding package to support the continued growth of the life sciences sector. Unveiled by chancellor Jeremy Hunt, the ‘life sci for growth’ package includes £121m to speed up clinical trials and improve access to real-time data, as well as £48m to support scientific innovation in preparing for potential health emergencies. Another £154m has been committed to increase the capacity of the UK Biobank – the biomedical database containing the in-depth genetic information of half a million UK citizens. This funding will go towards a new facility at Manchester Science Park, a new hub to help small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) collaborate with industry and academia, and better IT to accommodate multi-disciplinary data. A new call for proposals has also been released as part of the initiative that will offer £250m to incentivise pension schemes to invest in the UK’s science and technology ...
An intensive study into the treatment of angina has found that the use of tests for small blood vessel function in the heart clarify the underlying cause of the condition. Patients referred to hospital by their General Practitioner (GP) for assessment of chest pain were invited into the study if a heart scan had ruled out blocked heart arteries. The trial showed that the common underlying cause of chest symptoms in angina sufferers was myocardial ischaemia with no obstructive arteries (INOCA), which wasn’t diagnosed by a standard CT heart scan. The diagnosis was clarified using the tests where INOCA was 4 times more likely, while ‘normal’ results were half as less likely to detect small vessel disease. The study, funded by the British Heart Foundation and the Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Government and sponsored by the NHS Golden Jubilee, was carried out by heart specialists from the University ...
Treatment concerns up to 150,000 patients in England with chronic heart failure The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has issued final draft guidance recommending AstraZeneca’s dapagliflozin. The therapy, also known as Forxiga, is as an option among adults with symptomatic chronic heart failure with mildly reduced or preserved ejection fraction. Currently, there are no disease-modifying treatments for this specific condition and, thus, dapagliflozin becomes the first NICE-recommended treatment for this population. Meanwhile, evidence from a clinical trial demonstrated that adding dapagliflozin to standard care with diuretics effectively decreases the combined risk of dying from cardiovascular causes or the need attend hospital with heart failure. This was compared during the study with placebo in addition to standard care. Helen Knight, director of medicines evaluation at NICE, reflected: “Until now there have been no treatments available to delay or slow the progression of this type of heart failure. “The ...
Cara Therapeutics and Vifor Fresenius Medical Care Renal Pharma (VFMCRP) have announced that the US’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended Kapruvia (difelikefalin) to treat chronic kidney disease (CKD)-associated pruritus. Kapruvia has been recommenced to treat moderate-to-severe CKD-associated pruritus in adult patients who are undergoing haemodialysis. This will allow patients in Northern Ireland, England, and Wales to get access to Kapruvia. The recommendation from NICE follows the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) authorisation of Kapruvia for the same indication in April last year. Cara Therapeutics president and CEO Christopher Posner said: “We are pleased that Kapruvia will be available to CKD patients in England, Wales and Northern Ireland who are undergoing haemodialysis and suffering from moderate-to-severe CKD-associated pruritus. “Together with VFMCRP, we are committed to bringing our first-of-its kind therapy to providers and patients around the world to help change the way pruritus ...
Lung cancer accounts for more than 20% of cancer deaths in the UK A new UK study has revealed the potential of using artificial intelligence (AI) to help doctors diagnose lung cancer earlier. LIBRA, which was led by researchers from the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, the Institute of Cancer Research, London, and Imperial College London, used data from the CT scans of nearly 500 patients with large lung nodules – abnormal growths – to develop an AI model. The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, the National Institute for Health and Care Research, RM Partners and Cancer Research UK also supported the study. To assess how effective the new model was at predicting cancer, the team used a measure called the area under the curve (AUC). An AUC of one would indicate a perfect model, while 0.5 would be expected if the model was randomly guessing. The results, which have ...
BBC By James Gallagher Health and science correspondent A “very concerning” rise in the number of people catching measles in the UK has been reported by health officials. The virus spreads incredibly easily and a fall in vaccination rates is leaving more children vulnerable to infection. There were 54 cases of measles in the whole of last year. However, there have already been 49 in the first four months of 2023. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is encouraging parents to ensure their children’s vaccinations are up to date. The main symptoms of measles are a fever and a rash. But it can cause more serious complications including meningitis, and an infection can be fatal. That is why the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is part of routine childhood immunisations. Vaccination rates had been falling in the UK before the Covid pandemic. However, the disruption caused by Covid has dented vaccination ...
The team developed a deep learning AI model that can identify which at-risk infants have ROP that may lead to blindness if left untreated, and they hope their technique could improve access to screening in the many areas with limited neonatal services and few trained ophthalmologists. The study, by an international team of scientists and clinicians in the UK, Brazil, Egypt and the US, supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, is published in The Lancet Digital Health. Lead author Dr. Konstantinos Balaskas (Director, Moorfields Ophthalmic Reading Centre & Clinical AI Lab, Moorfields Eye Hospital and Associate Professor, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology) said, “Retinopathy of prematurity is becoming increasingly common as survival rates of premature babies improve across the globe, and it is now the leading cause of childhood blindness in ...
Journal reference: Tsampasian, V., et al. (2023) Risk Factors Associated With Post−COVID-19 Condition. JAMA Internal Medicine. doi.org/10.1001/jamainternmed.2023.0750. Being vaccinated against Covid halves people’s risk of developing long Covid, according to new research from the University of East Anglia. Long Covid still affects some two million people in the UK, and new research published today reveals the risk factors associated with developing the condition. Overweight people, women, smokers and those over the age of 40 are also more likely to suffer from long Covid according to the study – which includes more than 860,000 patients and is thought to be the largest of its kind. The study also finds that co-morbidities such as asthma, COPD, Type 2 Diabetes, coronary heart disease, immunosuppression, anxiety and depression are also associated with increased risk of long Covid. And patients who are hospitalized during their acute Covid infection are also ...
A stop-smoking mobile app that senses where and when you might be triggered to light up could help you quit, according to University of East Anglia research. Quit Sense is the world’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) stop smoking app that detects when people are entering a location where they used to smoke. It then provides support to help manage people’s specific smoking triggers in that location. A study published today shows how the new app helped more smokers to quit than people who were only offered online NHS support. The research team hopes that by helping people manage trigger situations, the new app will help more smokers to quit. The work is published in Nicotine and Tobacco Research. Lead researcher Prof Felix Naughton, from UEA’s School of Health Sciences, said, “We know that quit attempts often fail because urges to smoke are triggered by spending time ...
