Viral hepatitis is a major global health issue since it is the seventh leading cause of death worldwide. Around half of hepatitis-related deaths reported are due to the hepatitis B virus infection, which is transmitted through blood and body fluids. This virus remains undetected in the body for a long duration without causing any immediate symptoms. Once triggered, it leads to severe complications like liver damage and cancer.
A research team from the Imperial College London and Medical Research Council Unit, The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine collaborated with the Pasteur Institute in Paris and other African and European institutions, have developed an accurate diagnostic score that includes an inexpensive blood test to identify patients who needs urgent treatment against Hepatitis B virus.
The score includes two simple blood tests, where one measures the presence of antigens and the one detects the production of enzymes by the liver in response. This new diagnostic kit is named as TREAT-B, which provides 85% sensitivity and 77% specificity.
The scientists claimed that further research has to be conducted by analyzing its success rates in larger studies. Along with its efficiency, the test is also quick and can be implemented as a finger-prick test to deliver quick results.
