Despite being a popular flavor, some people keep their distance from spicy foods because they find the hot sensation unbearable. In other cases, people believe they need to exclude spices from their diet completely to stay healthy. Dr. Khursheed Jeejeebhoy, an emeritus professor of medicine at the University of Toronto, Canada, said "There is no evidence they have to do that. Spices in moderation are to be enjoyed, and there is no evidence that spicy food is bad for you." 

So with no further ado, here are 4 health benefits of spicy foods:

1. Healthy heart

A research study was published in 2017 under the guidance of Dr. Zhiming Zhu where he revealed that the consumption of chili peppers reduced death rates caused by heart attacks, vascular disease, and stroke. The mechanism behind this action was not proven but it was suggested that the moderate use of spices could reduce LDL cholesterol levels in the body.

2. Burn extra calories

A recent study from Purdue University revealed that the regular consumption of red peppers could burn more calories and reduces the appetite. But this occasional addition could be beneficial only when combined with an active lifestyle and a nutritious diet.

3. Cancer prevention

Capsaicin is the component in chili peppers which provides the spicy effect in foods, but it has also has anti-cancer property. Dr. Gregory A. Plotnikoff, senior consultant for healthcare innovation from Allina Hospitals and Clinics in Minnesota said, "It has the same effects on the body as certain cancer drugs do." 

4. Pain relief

Capsaicin also helps in nullifying the pain in our bodies. This ingredient targets a brain chemical named “substance P,” which plays a major role during injuries. Some studies have even suggested that capsaicin plays a role against ulcers by destroying the bacteria named Helicobacter pylori.
