Promising Multi-Cancer Screening Test

It is a well-known fact that cancer diagnosis at an earlier stage is the most critical step.

A research team from Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, US discovered a new test where ten types of cancer could be identified in a patient, well in advance.

The ten types of cancer include ovary cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, bowel cancer, lymphoma, myeloma, liver, and lung and gallbladder cancers. They were predicted with 70-90% accuracy level. Even esophagus, head and neck cancer can be detected with more than 50% accuracy. Among these types, ovarian cancer detection showed the most promise as it can be detected with a 90% accuracy level.

The test was, however, less effective in detecting uterus cancer, stomach cancer and prostate cancer.

Dr Eric Klein, the lead author of the research work said, "This is potentially the holy grail of cancer research, to find cancers that are currently hard to cure at an earlier stage when they are easier to cure, and we hope this test could save many lives; Most cancers are detected at a late stage, but this 'liquid biopsy' gives us the opportunity to find them months or years before someone would develop symptoms and be diagnosed."

The results of these tests would be delivered within two weeks’ time.
But, experts still believe that there is much more work that has to be done to save lives.
