Migratory airborne diseases are becoming more prevalent among the travelers. These diseases are easily transmitted and spread via air travel.

Recently a case has been registered in Liverpool, Northern England where a person was diagnosed with a dangerous MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). Since he stayed in the Middle East before traveling to Britain, he was found to have contracted MERS. This was the fifth case to be reported, with other cases being reported in 2012 and 2013.

In the Middle East, camels act as carriers of MERS. The symptoms of MERS are notably similar to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) which broke out in China during 2003. It is believed that the chance of human transmission is high which is why the World Health Organization announced that the hospitals should take the necessary steps to mitigate the spreading of the disease.

Jenny Harries, the deputy medical director of PHE said, “It is important to emphasize that although a case has been identified, the overall risk of disease transmission to the public is very low.” People who were in close contact with the patient over the past few days should also be monitored.
