Whether working in a conflict zone or a good state of the art hospital, basic surgical instruments are necessary to perform even the most simple of operations. They consist of instruments such as scalpels, forceps, hooks and retractors.

Each of these categories has a number of specialized tools. Only looking at forceps, we can identify four that are imperative for most surgeries:

Biopsy forceps

Usually used along with an endoscope, biopsy forceps are used to grab hold of and secure samples for medical evaluation.

Needle holder

Similar in shape to a scissor, needle holders are used to drive the needle through the flesh when applying sutures.

Dressing forceps

Also scissor-shape, dressing forceps are designed for dressing a patient’s wound or to remove various objects from wounds. This could include drainage tubes to fragments of foreign matter.

Extraction forceps

As the word implies, extraction forceps are used to ‘remove’, more specifically, to remove molars and are present in every dental practice.
