A lawsuit has been filed in the Missouri state court against Johnson & Johnson by 22 ovarian cancer patients. The women claim that the company’s talc-based products carry cancer-causing asbestos.
It has been stated by the women and their families taking legal actions mentioned that the cancer was caused by decade-long use of J&J’s Baby Powder and other cosmetic. The petitioners have alleged that the company failed to warn consumers about cancer risks in spite of the knowledge that its talc was contaminated with asbestos at least since the 1970s.
J&J has been accused with 9,000 cases filed by users of its Shower to Shower talc products (sold in 2012 to Valeant Pharmaceuticals) and Baby Powder.
The company has vehemently denied the fact that the talc products cause cancer and that they contained asbestos, a cancer-causing component.
The larger part of the accusers this case has stated that ovarian cancer was caused by talc, in women who used it for feminine hygiene while a few alleged that the talc contamination allegedly occurred owing to the presence of asbestos which caused mesothelioma, a tissue cancer which is caused by asbestos exposure.
