Google announced on 21st August that a makeover for its Google Fit exercise app will be rolled out this week which incorporates new activities and a heart health sensor functioning on a suggestion from top health institutions into the app.
“There’s a lot of talk out there about how to stay active and healthy: ‘get your steps in,’ ‘sitting is the new smoking,’ ‘no pain, no gain.’ It can feel overwhelming,” Margaret Hollendoner, head of product for Google Fit, mentioned in a blog post explaining the changes. “So we’ve worked with the American Heart Association (AHA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to understand the science behind physical activity and help you get the amount and intensity needed to improve your health.”
There will be two new features namely “Move Minutes” and “Heart Points” in the redesigned app. Any form of activity, sensed by the phone or watch or entered by the user will be recorded by the former, while moderate levels of exercise like a brisk walk or higher intensity activities like sports will be accounted in the latter.
“When you’re walking, running or biking throughout the day, Google Fit will automatically detect these activities using your phone or watch sensors — like the accelerometer and GPS — to estimate the number of Heart Points you earn,” Hollendoner wrote. “If you’re into a different type of exercise, you can choose other activities like gardening, pilates, rowing, or spinning, and Google Fit will calculate the Heart Points and Move Minutes achieved during your workout.”
Other features included in the Google Fit aim to enhance education and the health of consumers. Google announced that Android phones and smartwatches, as well as Apple Devices consumers using the Wear OS versions, can avail the improved design this week.
