Kampala, February 4: Uganda's Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization and other partners launched the world's first vaccine trial for Sudan Ebola virus on February 3 local time.
On January 30 local time, the Ugandan Ministry of Health announced that the country had an Ebola outbreak again after a lapse of two years, and a nurse in the capital Kampala died of Ebola virus infection.
A statement issued by the WHO said that after the outbreak, Uganda's local leading researchers prepared for the trial within 4 days with the support of the WHO and other partners. This is the first clinical efficacy trial of a vaccine against Sudan Ebola virus.
Reuters reported that the trial will mainly target contacts of confirmed cases.
According to the Associated Press, on February 3, two more relatives of the deceased nurse were confirmed to be infected with Ebola virus. The Ugandan government is currently investigating the source of the epidemic. Since there are about 4 million highly mobile populations in the Kampala area, epidemic prevention work will face great difficulties.
According to the Ugandan Ministry of Health, at least 234 people who have been in contact with the outbreak have been identified so far. According to the investigation, the deceased nurse had sought treatment at a hospital outside Kampala and later went to Mbale in the east of the country to seek help from a traditional healer.
Uganda has reported Ebola outbreaks several times. The country's last Ebola outbreak occurred between September 2022 and January 2023.
