On the afternoon of June 10, a delegation of over 10 people, including Professor Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry, Coordinator General of the Cooperation-Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC-COMSTECH), Maggie Lowe, an official from the Commercial Section of the Embassy of Pakistan in China, and Professor Liu Xinmin, Advisor on Traditional Medicine of the World Health Organization and Coordinator for Traditional Chinese Medicine of OIC-COMSTECH, visited the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Medicines and Health Products (CCCMHPIE). They held discussions and exchanges with Secretary Meng Dongping of the Chamber and other representatives. The two sides engaged in extensive and lively exchanges on strengthening cooperation between China and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in the field of traditional medicine under the framework of the SCO Traditional Medicine Industry Alliance, promoting China-Pakistan cooperation in traditional medicine, and facilitating the integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) into the international market. Relevant personnel from the TCM Department of the Chamber also attended the talks.
Professor Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry introduced the basic information of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and OIC-COMSTECH, including their organizational structure, distribution of members, purposes, visions, functions, and responsibilities. He focused on OIC-COMSTECH's goals, directions, and related initiatives in improving the medical technology capabilities and pharmaceutical regulatory standards of OIC member states, as well as promoting the development of their pharmaceutical and health industries. He stated that most OIC member states have a tradition of using traditional medicine represented by herbal medicines and a demand for the systematic and industrialized development of traditional medicine. However, at present, many OIC member states lack experience in traditional medicine regulation, formulation of national pharmacopoeias, and market access for traditional medicines. They hope to learn from China's pharmaceutical regulatory system to help enhance the pharmaceutical health supervision and market standardization levels of the member states. He also mentioned that OIC-COMSTECH attaches great importance to the development of traditional medicine and international cooperation, and hopes to strengthen exchanges on traditional medicine regulation and industrial docking with China, enhance cooperation in clinical research, drug research and development, diagnosis and treatment technologies, and standard alignment. It aims to give full play to the synergistic effect between the SCO Traditional Medicine Industry Alliance and OIC-COMSTECH, and jointly promote the implementation of specific projects such as talent training, standard setting, and product research and development.
Secretary Meng Dongping extended a warm welcome to Professor Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry, Ms. Maggie Lowe, Professor Liu Xinmin, and their delegation. She noted that the Chamber, in collaboration with OIC-COMSTECH, successfully held the "China-Pakistan Online Exchange Conference on Traditional Medicine (Herbal Medicine)" at the end of May, which attracted active participation from many Chinese enterprises. This demonstrated the willingness of China's industry to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the traditional medicine industry with OIC countries, including Pakistan. Secretary Meng introduced the Chamber's work over the years in promoting the internationalization of China's pharmaceutical and health industry, especially the basic information of the SCO Traditional Medicine Industry Alliance, its work content, achievements since its establishment, and future work directions. She stated that the OIC is an international organization with extensive influence among Islamic countries, and China has a long history and foundation of cooperation in traditional medicine with many of its member states. Strengthening in-depth cooperation between the SCO Traditional Medicine Industry Alliance and OIC-COMSTECH, and establishing a traditional medicine registration and clinical center through powerful collaboration, can provide a professional and scalable platform and resources for China and OIC countries to carry out projects such as traditional medicine R&D and innovation, economic and trade exchanges, achievement transformation, and investment and financing. She expressed the expectation that both sides will, based on the SCO and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, give full play to the radiating effect of the SCO Traditional Medicine Industry Alliance and OIC-COMSTECH, and actively explore cooperation between China and Islamic countries in standard alignment, regulatory exchanges, and industrial implementation.
At the meeting, all participants had in-depth exchanges on the current development, industrialization, and development needs of traditional medicine in OIC countries, and reached a consensus on in-depth cooperation in standard setting, trade matching, and platform construction in the future.
