On August 31, 2022, the National Medical Products Administration approved the registration application for United Imaging's innovative product "Magnetic Resonance Imaging System".
On April 29 this year, Lian Ying officially said that by 2024, its uMR Jupiter 5T had been stationed in Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Central South Hospital of Wuhan University, Peking University Third Hospital, Shandong Provincial Third Hospital, Anhui Provincial Hospital, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, Xinhua Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University, Cancer Hospital affiliated to Sun Yat sen University, Chongqing Three Gorges Central Hospital, Changzhou First People's Hospital, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Shenzhen Advanced Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hainan University and other top hospitals and university research institutes, and comprehensively carried out systemic clinical research on nerves, abdomen, cardiovascular, limbs and joints.
In addition, in July of this year, Lianying uMR Jupiter 5.0T also entered Shanghai Xiehua Brain Hospital, which became the first private hospital in China to introduce Shanghai United Imaging's independently developed and internationally leading 5.0T magnetic resonance imaging system and officially put it into clinical use.
02. Industry's first whole-body clinical trial, ultra-high field magnetic resonance uMR Jupiter 5T
In 2021, as a new species in the industry, human whole-body 5T magnetic resonance imaging was introduced, ushering in the era of whole-body ultra-high field imaging. The uMR 5T has broken through the limitations of ultra-high field magnetic resonance brain scanning for the first time, expanding the boundaries of clinical vision. It not only brings a "unseen" clinical evidence chain to the whole body ultra-high field, but also provides a new dimension of vision for the discovery and diagnosis of difficult and serious diseases; It has transcended the existence of medical imaging tools and grown into an ecological link that drives innovation and a global multi center platform.
It is reported that the 5T magnetic resonance imaging system not only fully utilizes the advantages of ultra-high field magnetic resonance such as high signal-to-noise ratio, high resolution, and high sensitivity, but also effectively solves the problems of image uniformity and imaging safety caused by ultra-high fields. It combines the advantages of high field strength brain function, microstructure evaluation, and high-resolution imaging of the whole body.
Compared to 3T, 5T provides rich tissue structure and functional information with full height resolution, high contrast, and high signal-to-noise ratio, which is conducive to the evaluation of fine structures and small lesions, as well as the capture of small structural and functional changes caused by changes in tissue function, disease development, and disease treatment. It can better assist in related research in neuroscience, neurocognitive science, development, metabolism, disease mechanisms, and treatment plan exploration.
Compared with 7T, 5T has more advantages in RF field uniformity and SAR value (safety) control, which is conducive to the development and application of ultra-high field strength whole-body imaging methods, and research on RF technology, imaging sequences, image reconstruction, and image processing under ultra-high field strength. Due to the excellent clinical accessibility of 5T, research related to 5T is more convenient for clinical translation.
The uMR Jupiter 5T provides high signal-to-noise ratio, resolution, and imaging speed, while also offering a wide range of advanced applications to meet clinical needs in various parts of the body. Ultra high resolution scanning of the head, abdomen, knee joints, pancreas and other parts can be performed, which is applied in clinical studies of smoking disease, Parkinson's disease, brain gut axis, cardiogenic stroke, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), etc. It presents richer subtle structures and more accurate quantitative analysis, helping to detect systemic diseases at an ultra early stage.
In addition to conducting research on multi organ systemic diseases in ultra-high field, 5T magnetic resonance imaging also provides a new imaging platform choice in the integration of ultra-high field diagnosis and treatment research, translational medicine research, and other fields.
In fact, since 5T entered clinical research, a batch of original high scoring papers from scratch have emerged in the process of collaborative efforts between industry, academia, research, and medicine, and have been included in top journals such as Radiology, Annals of Neurology, Oncogene, etc. At the same time, a "chain effect" has formed between industry, academia, research, and medicine, which has also promoted the deepening of clinical and scientific research applications.
At Zhongshan Hospital, medical practices such as 5T whole-body ultra-high field imaging, metabolic imaging, digital twin, and scene revolution are being carried out; At Peking Union Medical College Hospital, 5T, as a research tool open to society, is innovatively developing customized specialized coils around difficult and severe cases; At Tsinghua University, the 5T professional talent ecosystem is thriving. In October of this year, the uMR Jupiter 5T whole-body clinical ultra-high field magnetic resonance imaging system, introduced by the Biomedical Imaging Center of Tsinghua University's campus level research platform, was officially opened for testing services to users both on and off campus.
03. Ultra high field magnetic resonance technology continues to develop
At present, MRI technology has become an indispensable and important diagnostic tool in medical imaging technology. Since the FDA approved medical magnetic resonance imaging equipment for clinical use in 1984, the medical magnetic resonance equipment market has undergone more than 30 years of development.
With the penetration of technology in medical imaging diagnosis and the increasing emphasis on the medical imaging market, the demand for MRI market is expected to continue to expand. The clinical demand is driving the development of magnetic resonance technology towards higher signal-to-noise ratio, higher resolution and contrast, and faster imaging speed, which requires higher field strength.
After 20 years of continuous research on ultra-high field strength, the main ultra-high field magnetic resonance imaging currently used in clinical applications are 7T and 5T magnetic resonance imaging. At the same time, ultra-high field MR devices such as 9.4T magnetic resonance imaging, 10.5T magnetic resonance imaging, and 11.7T magnetic resonance imaging were also born.
Before the introduction of the 14T magnetic resonance equipment, the highest record was the 11.7T magnetic resonance jointly developed by France and Siemens Healthineers. It has been installed and tested, and obtained the first image in December 2021. This giant human microscope, weighing 132 tons and 5 meters long, is the highest field strength whole-body magnetic resonance system used for the human body. It will break through the visual limit and is highly anticipated by the academic community.
In addition, multiple research institutions or teams internationally are currently working on the development of higher and more powerful 14T magnetic resonance imaging. In addition to the project led by Radboud University at the Donders Institute for Brain Cognitive Behavior in the Netherlands, several countries including China, Germany, and South Korea are also included.
With the rapid development of medical imaging technology, the emergence of 5T magnetic resonance equipment marks a new era for clinical ultra-high field magnetic resonance technology. With the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology's "13th Five Year Plan" National Key R&D Program, the uMR Jupiter 5T whole-body ultra-high field magnetic resonance imaging system independently developed by Shanghai United Imaging Company has become the world's first whole-body ultra-high field magnetic resonance imaging system.
Public information shows that in the past three years, thanks to open cooperation among hospitals, universities, and research institutes worldwide, 5T magnetic resonance technology has been continuously developed and matured in rich clinical practice and scientific research. The uMR Jupiter 5T has demonstrated unprecedented abilities in ultra-high field whole-body clinical applications, such as head, joint, body, cardiovascular, and other fields, directly addressing clinical diagnostic pain points.
