Founded in 1982, Staar Surgical focuses on the ophthalmology sector. According to data from Tidus Medical Devices, the company currently has 75 products on the market in the United States and 5 products on the market in China. Its core product pipeline is the Evo implantable collagen lens (ICL) pipeline.
Its newly appointed President and CEO, Foust, joined the company in April 2023 as Chief Operating Officer and will assume the title of President in March 2025. During his tenure at Staar, he was responsible for research and development, global sales, marketing, manufacturing, and operations. The company stated that he led the company to a successful operational restructuring and a return to profitable growth.
Foust is a seasoned veteran of the medical device industry. Prior to joining Staar, he held senior leadership positions at Johnson & Johnson, including Global President of Surgical Vision and Global President of Mentor. He also held early positions at DePuy Synthes, Aventis Pharmaceuticals, and Roche Pharmaceuticals.
The appointment officially took effect on August 4th. Simultaneously with Foust's appointment, Staar also announced the promotion of its Chief Financial Officer, Deborah Andrews, to Executive Vice President. Andrews reportedly held various accounting and finance leadership positions at Staar from 1995 until her retirement in 2020. She returned to Staar in March 2025 as interim Chief Financial Officer, and was officially appointed in June 2025.
It is worth noting that shortly before the series of personnel changes and appointments, Staar sought to merge with Alcon due to persistently sluggish sales in the Chinese market, but the merger was ultimately terminated because it could not obtain the shareholder votes necessary to complete the transaction.
With the latest appointments, Staar has made positive adjustments and stated that under the new leadership, the company is ready to drive revenue growth, profit expansion, and accelerate innovation.
