On July 23, an announcement from Watson Bio ( 300142.SZ ) attracted market attention.

The bivalent HPV vaccine WALRINVAX (vial specification) produced by the subsidiary Yuxi Zerun has obtained a drug registration certificate issued by the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority and is approved for marketing in the local market.
This is not a simple news story about "going global".
Watson Bio's Tanzanian registration certificate is both an "entry ticket" to the African market and a "must-answer question" regarding its commercialization capabilities.
The positive announcement contradicted the stock price movement.
On July 23, Watson Bio closed at 13.26 yuan, down 1.70%.

On July 24, the decline further widened, hitting a low of 12.72 yuan during the session. By the morning close, the stock was trading at 12.83 yuan, a drop of 3.24%. Other data showed that the stock price once fell to 12.75 yuan, a drop of as much as 3.85%.
Amid an overall 2% decline in the vaccine sector, Watson Bio became the worst-performing stock in the sector.
The Tanzanian registration certificate is an "admission ticket," not a "receipt."
As the announcement clearly states, "The timing, progress, and final sales situation of the market are still uncertain." From registration approval to actual revenue generation, there are numerous hurdles in between, including import permits, channel establishment, and public health procurement negotiations.
In the African market, the complexity of these processes far exceeds expectations. For capital markets focused on quarterly earnings, this "distant water" is hardly enough to quench their "immediate thirst."
According to institutional holdings data, only 14 institutions held a total of 50.265 million shares in the first half of 2026, with the holding ratio dropping to 3.19%.
In the 2025 annual report, the number of institutions was as high as 265, with a holding ratio of 16.95%. In just six months, the institutional holding ratio plummeted from nearly 17% to just over 3%.
This is not a normal portfolio adjustment, but a large-scale withdrawal of major funds.
Such a low institutional holding ratio means that even with news-driven stimuli, there is a lack of sufficient funds to drive the stock price upward.
Why Tanzania?
One set of data in the announcement is worth highlighting: According to IARC GLOBOCAN 2024 estimates, cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer incidence and mortality among women in Tanzania.
Tanzania has made increasing HPV vaccination coverage a public health priority in reducing the burden of cervical cancer and advancing the goal of cervical cancer elimination.
This is a typical market with "high burden and low coverage".
One of the core goals of the WHO's global strategy to eliminate cervical cancer is "90-70-90", and the African continent happens to be one of the regions with the lowest HPV vaccination coverage.
The gap between Tanzania's urgent needs and limited supply is precisely the practical entry point for Chinese vaccines to go global.
More importantly, WALRINVAX received WHO prequalification (PQ certification) in August 2024.
This is a "hard threshold." Only vaccines with PQ certification are eligible to enter the United Nations procurement system and are more likely to gain the trust of regulatory agencies in various countries.
Tanzania's registration and approval process is essentially a reaffirmation of the WHO's endorsement.
How far is it from "certification" to "monetization"?
Exporting vaccines is never a simple matter of "getting a certificate and clearing customs".
From registration and approval to actual sales, there are many hurdles in between, including import licenses, cold chain logistics, distribution channels, public health procurement negotiations, and medical insurance access.
In the African market, the complexity of these processes often exceeds expectations. Weak infrastructure, limited payment capacity, and uncontrollable regulatory processes are all real challenges.
Watson received approval for its "vial specification" rather than its pre-filled syringe specification.
This detail suggests that the product is positioned more towards public health large-scale vaccination scenarios, rather than high-end, self-funded scenarios in the private market.
In the price-sensitive African public health market, the cost advantage of Chinese vaccines is the "spear," but the profit margin is the "shield."
Finding a balance between low prices and profitability tests supply chain efficiency and economies of scale.
The "African Narrative" of Domestically Produced HPV Vaccines
Watson is not the first Chinese HPV vaccine company to enter the African market.
However, its path is unique: bivalent, Pichia pastoris expression system, domestic market launch in 2022, WHO PQ certification in 2024, and launch in Tanzania in 2026.
This is a clear line of development from "domestic verification" to "international certification" and then to "implementation in emerging markets".
The broader industry context is that the global HPV vaccine market has long been monopolized by Merck (9-valent) and GSK (2-valent), resulting in high prices and limited supply.
Chinese companies' bivalent HPV vaccines are disrupting this pattern. Walrinvax from Watson and Xinkening from Wantai Biological have become the "twin stars" of domestically produced HPV vaccines going global.
The African market is one of the main battlegrounds for this "price revolution".
But the outcome of this battle will not depend on who obtains more registration certificates, but on who can truly establish a sustainable commercial system in the local area.
Registration certificates are just a "stepping stone"; supply chains, channels, localization partnerships, and government relations are the "moats."
Conclusion
The golden age of Chinese-made vaccines going global is dawning, but behind every overseas registration certificate lies a comprehensive test of both research and development capabilities and commercialization capabilities.
This certificate from Tanzania is the first page of Watson's answer sheet.
