The latest in digital health news is that Amazon would be acquiring a virtual pharmacy named PillPack. Amazon’s website which is famous for online shopping is planning to expand by also including prescription medication.
Jeff Wilke, CEO of Amazon Worldwide Consumer said, “PillPack’s visionary team has a combination of deep pharmacy experience and a focus on technology; PillPack is meaningfully improving its customers’ lives, and we want to help them continue making it easy for people to save time, simplify their lives, and feel healthier. We’re excited to see what we can do together on behalf of customers over time.”
Amazon paid an estimated $1 billion for the New England-based startup, but the terms of their deal have not been published. This startup will deliver medicine in proper dose packaging, manage refills and renewals and confirm that shipments are properly sent on time, specifically targeting people who take multiple daily medicines.
TJ Parker, co-founder and CEO of PillPack, said “PillPack makes it simple for any customer to take the right medication at the right time, and feel healthier; Together with Amazon, we are eager to continue working with partners across the healthcare industry to help people throughout the US who can benefit from a better pharmacy experience.”
Amazon was not the only retailer to show interest in PillPack. Walmart also put in an offer to acquire the company but the online giant sealed the deal.
