A recent study suggests that your partner’s BMI (Body Mass Index) can possibly predict your risk of developing diabetes in future.
According to the WHO statistical report, around 1.5 million deaths are caused due to diabetes worldwide. With these statistics in mind, a research team from the University of Copenhagen and Aarhus University in Denmark conducted research on diabetes patients.
They discovered a striking factor that suggested spouses are usually similar in body weight since they share similar diets and exercise habits while living together. Thus the researchers planned to proceed with their research further by checking the partner’s body weight conditions. They found that there is a huge risk of developing type 2 diabetes if the partner’s body weight is high.
Jannie Nielsen, the lead investigator said, “We have discovered that you can predict a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes based on his or her partner’s BMI; if we adjusted for the women’s own weight, they did not have a heightened risk of developing type 2 diabetes as a result of their husband’s BMI. But even when we adjusted for the weight in men, they had a risk.”
