Some of the most common autoimmune diseases prevalent among people are rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. One should be well aware that food can either increase or reduce inflammation.

Michelle Simon, a naturopath doctor cum president of the Institute for Natural Medicine said, “Inflammation that’s continued beyond the healthy, acute healing phase has been implicated in almost every chronic health condition and a number of autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.” Michelle Simon further added, “Naturopathic medicine remedies, such as tonics and broths with natural, anti-inflammatory ingredients and immune-modulating agents, can help support the body’s natural healing process.”

We have listed three scientifically validated drinks which help to fight against autoimmune disorders.

1.      Baking soda + water

According to the Journal of Immunology, consumption of 1/4 tsp baking soda with 8 to 12 oz. of water can reduce inflammation for a short time. However, consuming baking soda on a regular basis could have various side effects like bone loss and liver damage. Hence, it is strictly instructed to consume only twice a week after a meal, for no longer than a month.

2.      Parsley + ginger green juice

A recent study showed that consumption of parsley and ginger green juice once daily for 8 to 12 weeks can control inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis. Parsley has an anti-inflammatory ingredient named carnosol. Similarly, ginger contains a powerful anti-inflammatory component named gingerol. These anti-inflammatory components prevent the production of inflammatory molecules such as leukotriene and prostaglandin.

3.      Lemon + turmeric tonic

Michelle Simon said, “Numerous studies have shown that curcumin, the active ingredient found in turmeric, can help reduce the body’s inflammatory response and provide relief for joint pain and inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.”

Consumption of one cup of lemon and turmeric tonic every day for up to four weeks is recommended.
