Wound Healing Within Few Minutes Using 3D-Handheld Skin Printer

Wound healing is now possible within few minutes! A research team from the University of Toronto has designed a cost-effective 3D-handheld skin printer which can heal deep wounds in a matter of minutes, by evenly printing out skin layers on top of them.

Grafting is currently the preferred treatment for wound healing. But it has got several shortcomings. Even grafting won’t work for deep wounds since only the surface epidermis could be grafted leaving the underlying dermis layers of the skin.

That is where the handheld skin 3D bioprinter steps in and solve the problem. Most current 3D bioprinters were expensive, bulky, work at low speeds, and unfit for clinical use. But this 3D-handheld skin printer weighs less than a kilogram. No detailed training is needed and it looks similar to a white-out tape dispenser, where the tape roll is replaced by a tissue sheet forming microdevice.

Navid Hakimi, PhD student from the University of Toronto said, “Our skin printer promises to tailor tissues to specific patients and wound characteristics.”

The research team further plans to add few features like size expansion of the coverable wound areas. Still, in vivo studies and human trials remain pending.
