Many people assume that the lengthy R&D timeline of a new drug stems from slow experimental execution. In reality, the most time-consuming part is rarely running experiments, but the continuous verification of whether the drug is truly effective and sufficiently safe.

Clinical trials are conducted in sequential phases

Recruiting eligible subjects is highly challenging
Not all patients meet the trial eligibility criteria.
Each clinical trial sets strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, covering factors such as disease type, disease course, age, prior treatment history, and the presence of comorbidities.
The pool of eligible patients is limited, and the full communication process to obtain informed consent also takes considerable time. Subject recruitment has long been a core factor restricting trial progress.
Long-term follow-up is required for many diseases
For therapeutic areas such as chronic diseases and oncology, observing patients for only a few weeks or months is far from sufficient to evaluate the true therapeutic effect of a drug.
Researchers need to continuously track patients for an extended period, to verify whether the efficacy can be sustained and whether delayed adverse reactions will occur.
Longer patient follow-up periods will correspondingly extend the entire clinical trial cycle.
Extremely stringent requirements for data quality
Clinical trials are not limited to administering treatment. It is mandatory to ensure every piece of data is authentic, accurate and traceable.
Throughout the research process, continuous data verification, statistical analysis, quality control and ethical supervision are implemented. If missing, biased or abnormal data is identified, supplementary verification is usually required to ensure the final results are scientific and reliable.
Regulatory review is mandatory before marketing approval
Completing Phase III clinical trials does not mean the drug can be launched immediately.
Enterprises still need to compile complete application materials covering clinical research data, pharmaceutical research, production quality management and other documents, and submit them to regulatory authorities for technical review. During the review process, regulators may also require enterprises to supplement data or provide further clarifications when necessary.
A new drug can only obtain marketing approval after its quality, safety and effectiveness are fully demonstrated.

The long cycle of drug clinical trials is not caused by redundant procedures. Every step is closely tied to patients' medication safety. From early safety evaluation, efficacy verification, large-scale clinical research to regulatory review, every link requires sufficient data support.
For innovative drugs, the R&D cycle usually takes 8 to 15 years or even longer. Although the lengthy R&D process increases time and cost, it is the critical foundation to ensure drugs are launched on the market safely and effectively.
